19 mom old getting out of his crib...help!!!

My son taught himself how to get out of his crib yesterday afternoon and was VERY quiet about it. I had the monitor on and heard nothing. Then I was coming upstairs and heard what sounded like small stones hitting the hardwood floors at the bottom of the stairs. It wasn't stones, it was the contents of my jewelry box being dumped.

He got out once when I put him down to bed last night and then he got out this am and came into my room. Wouldn't you know it, it's the weekend DH is away fishing!

I just keep putting him back in and I have the gate across the hallway so he can't go downstairs...any other suggestions????? Pleeeeese!

What about putting him in a toddler bed? At least then he won't hurt himself if he gets out again.

Yeah what the previous post said.

I read once they hit 36 inches OR are beginning to climb out they need to go to a regular bed or a toddler bed because they wont get hurt falling out of a normal bed like they could in a crib. Good Luck!!!

He's 36" now (literally off the charts when the dr showed me) and our crib converts to a toddler bed.

I am thinking I could put a gate across his door to at least keep him in there. Anyone????

Yeah I would gate him in his room or a safe space like his room and a hallway or however it might be. I know at Kmart they have tall swing gates, which is very nice for taller kids and climbing kids lol

I was just looking at sites online to find anything saying a good age or anything fact wise on when to move to toddler beds and it says that some may climb but it isnt the right time for them so some parents are using Crib Tents... Here are a few links to what I found. Hope this helps!

My DS went into the toddler bed the same day he started to climb out He loved it. I think he was 18 months when he started that adventure and I just put a gate up at his bedroom door

Re: 19 mom old getting out of his crib...help!!!

Oh, my DD walked at 8.5 months (aack!) so by 13 months she was climbing out easily...we tried 3 different cribs with different kinds of slats and she would just figure out how to hook her toes around and get out! We moved to a toddler bed so it wouldn't be far to the floor!

Thanks everyone...I think I'm going to install a gate in his doorway and order the toddler bed rail for his crib. Until then I think I'll keep his crib side down so he doesn't fall as far.

WAH!
I wasn't ready for this.

If it were me, I would put him in the toddler bed, and then skip the gate and close his door and put a doorknob cover on the inside of his door (so he can't open it). If he can climb out of a brib, he can climb over a baby gate. My son was 16 months when he went to the toddler bed. He climbed out of the crib, but decided he would stay put in the "big boy bed"

That's what we did and it worked better than a gate. My twins are crazy escape artist/future rock climbers. I got the doorknob cover thingy at Target in a pack of 3.

Also, if you haven't already, secure all furniture in his room. And put a child-proofing thingy on his closet door... even on his dresser drawers.

(You don't want to walk in one day to see him on top of the dresser pulling down the mirror like my twins did the other day!! )
