How to make powdered milk taste good (enough)

Is there a way to make it taste better w/o adding real milk to it? We have to make budget cuts and will be using all of our emergency food stores instead of rationing them like we have been. This includes cutting real milk out and only using the powdered. It doesn't taste bad, but it def. doesn't taste like real milk either. Has anyone else used just powdered milk for drinking and how did you make the adjustment smoother?

Do you have any regular milk left? Could you spare a few bucks for even a half gallon? If you mix the regular milk with the powdered milk half and half, you shouldnt' be able to tell the difference. I don't drink milk but I've subbed out powdered on my kids mixed with half real milk before when finances dictated and they didn't even notice.

We've been doing that, but we really are at the point where we are stealing from Peter to pay Paul. Milk is out of the grocery budget. Basically we can get a few fresh fruits/veg and replace staples as they run out. We've already cut everything except rent (which covers utilities and internet) and food. We're having to cut into the grocery money to cover rent, which my dad already reduced as much as he can afford.

I don't know where you live, but if you're in the US could you apply for WIC? They give you tons of milk. Hugs & good luck.

Here's something you can try that I found from everydayfoodstorage.net
Here's the link to the "handout" where I found it--it discusses other neat things you can do with powdered milk. I've made it into sweetened condensed milk before, and used the "magic mix" for soups and sauces. http://everydayfoodstorage.net/handouts/milk.pdf

Drinkable Powdered Milk
Here are the items you will need to
start mixing your milk. A one gallon
jug, dry powdered milk, water, vanilla
and/or sugar.
Fill your jug with half of the water you
will need. If you are making a gallon
of milk then add 3 C. of powdered
milk. Mix with a wire wisk. Then
fill second half of water. To enhance
taste, try adding 1 t. vanilla and/or 1
t. sugar.
This is a MUST!!! You HAVE TO,
HAVE TO, HAVE TO serve the milk
chilled. There is nothing worse than
WARM powdered milk.

Oh, and make sure you follow directions specific to you brand of powdered milk. If it's instant you use more than if it's non-instant

our teenage boys lived on 1/2 whole milk and 1/2 powdered milk for years and even prefered it over straight jug milk.
