is my supply low?

hi guys. ive looked online and a lot of websites like to tell you when your milk supply isnt low, but how do i know if it is?
my daughter is 5 months old and for the last 2-3 weeks has been acting funny. she'll latch on, latch off and fuss, latch on, latch off and fuss, usually 4-5 times before the let-down happens- and its worse on the left.
sometimes even after the let down she nurse for 2-3 minutes then starts coming off and fussing again. ill switch to the other side but its the same thing. she's better when she's sleepy or not super hungry.
ive recently gotten my period so i dont know if that's effected my supply, ive also gotten a new pump. i work 4 nights a week and have been back to work for 3 months now. my pumping volume varies greatly day to day, but it has seemed to go down a little.
her weght is fine, but its only been a few weeks so i wouldnt expect that to change so soon. she also has enough wet diapers.
we have given her a bottle of pumped milk a few times just because i get so frustrated and she wont keep trying to nurse, but usually we just make her wait an hour or so and try nursing again.
thanks for your advice

Re: is my supply low?

Doesn't really sound like a supply issue but more of a "darnit, I'm hungry and not patient enough to wait for a let down" issue My DS went thru this around the same age too. Also your supply might be low prior to starting AF so you might want to be proactive next month and up your oatmeal intake and consider taking some Fenugreek or some other galactogogue to help with milk supply. This is what I do and it seems to help keep my supply up during that time.

ok, thanks for the info.
so...how does the baby act if she's not getting enough milk? or do we go solely by number of wet diapers/weight gain? i'd hate to wait until she's loosing weight to do something about it. i will eat more oatmeal and have already started fenugreek though so hopefully that helps, and i will read up on the distractable baby stuff.

Re: is my supply low?

If it was low supply, her weight would change quite quickly... If she hasn't lost any weight, it's probably just impatience and distraction.

My 3 month old just started this... And in exchange, nurses ALL night long. But he's voiding well (plenty of pee and 1 poop daily) and overall fairly happy so I'm not worried about it. I too first thought supply sicne we struggled in the beginning and I really did have low supply then.

What to look for with low supply, in my experience, would be lack of diapers... As long as she's wetting and her urine is clear or pale yellow, she's likely fine!

Re: is my supply low?

My daughter did the same thing and it turned out to defnitely be a supply issue. She seemed to be gaining a bit of weight but actually was only 1 oz more than her birth weight! I'd recommend renting a scale from a lactation specialist so you can measure for a week or so.
