S/O anyone make thier own butter, cheese etc??

We want to live more sustainably. We may in the future have a cow or two but not anytime soon. However we have access to Organic Raw milk. I told DH I'd love to have home-made butter/cheese but it would be impossible. He said "Why, just search the internet"

So I tried yogurt which was a flop (in a crock pot but we have a problem with our crockpot burning things even set on warm, like it only has one real heat setting, high, so I think that's where I went wrong). I'm going to try it again but I'd really like to learn to make butter and cheese too! I can't afford the nice organic stuff at the farmers market, but if I can make it myself.... Then maybe it'll be cheaper.

Anyone with experience that can give me a few pointers and point me in the right direction??

I made butter a while back in my food processor. Just whipped heavy cream till it solidified. It tasted pretty good...needed some salt. My problem was I didn't get the water all squeezed out of it. it was fun ( didn't take long) and would consider making it again if I could get the cream cheaper.

I used to make it as a kid. We had an old glass crank turn. I turn it until my arm was about to fall off and then my sister, then my little brother. After what seemed like hours we had butter and good upper arm strength!! lol

Then my mom would wash it real good and add salt.

You should be able to do it pretty easy in a mixer or food processor. I think I've heard of school kids making butter by shaking the cream in a jar and passing it around.

Butter can be made very easily in a food processor and I found these instructions for making mozzarella, I'm going to give it a go sometime.

I plan on giving it a go sometime but have never done it so far. I heard butter is super easy though, and I have heard cheese is easier than people think too.

I tried making mozarella (using Rikki's Beginner Kit) when I had someone giving me free gallons of raw milk. I tried a couple of times and we made one batch of ricotta like cheese that was very very tasty and one batch of rubbery balls that no one could eat. Right now my kit is sitting unused (kind of expensive to use a gallon of milk to make a tiny portion of cheese) but I might try again.

I've even made butter with the kids by giving them cream in a small container and then letting them shake, shake, shake. Fun!

I wasn't going to buy the kit, just find some rennet locally and give it a go using regular whole milk from the store first. Same with ricotta. We use ALOT of mazzorella here (and cheddar but that's pretty involved for someone with no idea what they are doing I think).

Butter i'm going to do 2 ways I think, jar and kids (wich should keep them out of my hair for a while) and using my mixer. the australian site had a good tip for spreadable butter by mixing w/olive oil.

just need to wait for DH to get paid again. We just had $600 of oil delivered so all experiments are on hold for the moment.

I haven't tried this, but I came across this recipe recently: http://latenightboutique.blogspot.com/2010/12/why-not-make-your-own-butter.html
