I was always terrified that I'd have a 13 pounder.

That woman is my new hero! Way to go, mama!

Re: first time mom has 13lb baby...natural birth!

I had an 11lb-er at home. He was only 2 days late, so definitely could've gotten that big had he stayed in longer. 4 hours of labor and 15 minutes of pushing. Actually my easiest labor of all 4.

I also had a playgroup friend who had a 12lb-er (was supposed to be at home but transferred to the hospital due to meconium stained fluid, however she still did it without any pain meds).

I love big squishy babies. My last was a preemie and it was a totally different experience! I'm hoping to have a 10+lb-er next time.

It is amazing. I am terrified I will have one that big with GD. Ds was 9.2 at 37w and that was rough.

DS2 was only 8lb14 but my labor with him was much easier than my labor with my 7lber

Nice! Someone locally had a 12lber as her first at our birth center my ds was 10lbs 1 oz and I am SO grateful that he was born at the birth center, they didn't torture him with sugar testing. (and he had no issues)

Re: first time mom has 13lb baby...natural birth!

i know that sugar testing is awful....but it can be really important sometimes. My son was born with an overgrowth syndrome--which put him at risk for severe hypoglycemia at birth....I know that large babies get subjected to glucose monitoring...sometimes in retrospect it is not needed as the baby is fine...but with certain overgrowth syndromes, the hypoglycemia can become so severe that a baby can have serious complications and even death as a result. We knew before my son was born that he had an overgrowth syndrome, and thankfully they were on top of his blood sugar so it never got to a dangerous level.

I DO think it is amazing that this woman gave birth to a 13lber!!! I don't want to take away from that fact....but as a mama to an oversized baby (9lbs 9oz at 37 weeks) and now oversized 2 year old (38 inches tall, 39lbs) I always feel compelled to mention overgrowth syndromes when super LARGE babies are born! As long as the baby doesn't have any other markers (ear pits or creases, stork bite, umbilical hernia, larger than normal tongue) in combination with being HUGE...then it is probably just a REALLY HUGE baby...if any of these other syptoms are present, I strongly believe that a geneticist should be consulted....

because of my son's overgrowth syndrome, he has a 1:10 chance of developing cancerous tumors in his abdominal organs. He is screened with blood work every 6 weeks and abdominal ultrasounds every 12 weeks (screening protocol to catch the tumors early if they show up).

I guess given my experience, I think large babies are fascinating....but it also scares me a little because many doctors are unaware of how subtle some of the characteristics of an overgrowth syndrome can be. My son had some other medical issues going on that made them realize that he most likely had something else going on besides his large size...thankfully all of which have resolved He is developing on track or ahead, which is really fun to watch since we didn't know when he was born how he'd do developmentally.

My youngest baby (4 months) was 9lbs 6oz at 39 weeks...and had a stork bite as well as a separation of her abdominal muscles (diastasis recti--also one of the subtle features of an overgrowth syndrome like Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome)...so even though genetic testing has been inconclusive for my son, we are following our 4 month old with the screening protocol as well just in case...because 1:10 cancer risk is nothng to mess around with!

sorry for the doom and gloom....just wanted to share my experience....

Re: first time mom has 13lb baby...natural birth!

This was on our local news in indiana. The female newscaster had the audacity to say live "I sure hope she had a c-section". The male anchor said "or at least some hefty drugs!"
My husband and I were appalled that anyone would actually say that! I am glad to know this was a natural child birth!
