Grunting while nursing!

My 1 month old grunts during some feedings. He almost sounds like he's angry! He will continue to nurse through the grunts but sometimes pops off. What is the cause of this? It gets difficult to nurse him when he gets this way and often has to calm down before continuing.

Any ideas?

Yes i suggest burping as well, even though baby might have only been nursing for a second, seems like they can still get a burp out. My LO used to do that as well. Baby might also still be learning the suck breathe swallow pattern, which might be why baby is taking in more air than usual. good luck i know the first few weeks can be the hardest!

Do you have an overabundant milk supply? If your let down is gushing at baby, he could be having a hard time keeping up.

Not sure about my milk supply. It varies depending on the time of day. I'm hoping the grunting goes away! I'll try burping more though....

My LO used to hum when he nursed?! My MIL said all of her kids hummed even when they ate solids, when they were little. My LO was a terrible burper, so maybe that was it.

Agree this might be the problem. I had a ferocious letdown/oversupply with both of my babies and they would make grunting noises as they gulped frantically to keep up.

Along with all the other great advice. I would also check into acid reflux. My second did this and would latch on, pull away and wimper, latch on glup a few times, pull away and wimper. We were all so miserable until my dr suggessted acid reflux. He also was eating every 30 min -1 hr round the clock-so he had an awful case of it.
I guess because the acid has caused sores in the esophagus when they swallow it causes them to grunt and pull away in pain.
Just another thing to consider.... Best of luck!
