flour sack vs "real" flat diaper questions
I have never seen or tried a "real" flat diaper IRL, but was inspired to try flats by this forum. I bought the 4/$4 flour sack towels from Target and they've been working well on my DD - very trim (way trimmer than a prefold) and seem to last 2ish hours and then are fully soaked. My question is, are these pretty much the same as a flat diaper I could buy from GMD or elsewhere? Are those as trim/thin as the flour sack? Are they the same size? Anyone have any pics to compare?
I don't have a ruler in the house but I just took a look and the flour sacks are squares (100% cotton) and look to be maybe a little less than 2.5 feet length and width. We use GMD yellow edge almost exclusively (and my 4 "flats") but am thinking of switching over to flats when she grows out of the yellow edge...and I'm wondering if I'm getting the true flat experience with these flour sacks! Thanks!!!!!! |

Re: flour sack vs "real" flat diaper questions
I find flour sack flats to be a tiny bit less absorbent than my LL's but since i have to use a doubler for my LL flats, then it doesn't really matter to me because I use a doubler with my flour sacks and with a doubler they do just as great a job as my LL's.
The texture of a flour sack is different. ( I also have the ones from Target). I can try to take some comparison pictures for you in a minute or two. Oh and the target flour sacks are pretty much a square and I know my LL's are not. They are also bigger. So I actually like folding my flour sacks better. eta flour sacks are thinner too. Hard to capture the difference in pics. These are straight out of the dryer. wrinkly sorry. Flour sack: LL flat: Flour sack on left LL on right: Last edited by ReadingRenee; 01-13-2011 at 08:13 AM. |

Re: flour sack vs "real" flat diaper questions
Thank you SO much for the pics and the info!!! So the absorbancy is only a little bit different?
In the pics they seem pretty similar!! when you say the texture is different, do you mean one is softer than the other? what would be the advantage of buying from LL or GMD versus just buying a bunch of flour sacks? (if any?) Thanks mama! |

Quote:
The texture differences seem to be that LL flats are thicker, denser, and heavier so they are a bit more absorbent. The flour sacks are thinner, lighter and smoother. And yes softer. I don't notice a huge difference in absorbency but if I could use LL flats with no doubler I might. With a doublers they are pretty equal to me. Padfolded the flour sacks are thinner than the LL. I like padfolding them because I don't get such a giant bump at the ends from the curly edges. This post here shows a really good difference between the two as well. I need more high def on my camera! ![]() http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/...postcount=1531 |

Re: flour sack vs "real" flat diaper questions
how much are they at target?
I bought a big bunch at sams, for kitchen towels..untill I came accross this thread. I paid $11.48 with tax( $12.43) for 12 30"x38" sized 100% cotton flour sacks towels. Are we talking about the same thing?

Re: flour sack vs "real" flat diaper questions
they're $4 for 4 of them, and I've heard the walmart ones are $5 for 5 but my Walmart doesn't have them. So the ones you found sound like a similar price. There's a new thread up that has pics comparing flats - and there's a pic of the walmart one - the target ones look exactly the same
