Teach me how to NIP!

Alrighty, I have the nursing thing pretty much down at this point. DS latches great, but at 3 weeks, I still have to guide him quite a bit.

My question is: Is there a way for me to NIP at this point without flashing myself to everyone? He still pops off 3 or 4 times before really latching, which usually involves him moving his head from side to side (sometimes trying to latch on to my knuckles LOL).

At this point, I just wear a tank top around the house which make it easy. I wear one under my shirt when I am out as well, so to avoid flashing my belly to everyone too.

DH said that if I am that self conscious, I should put a receiving blanket over us until he gets latched. I tried that but it ended up drawing MORE attention. LOL

Any tried and true tips for this 1st time breastfeeding mama?

I just wanted to add that I am absolutely ecstatic that I am nursing this baby. I had a rough time with DS1 and DD and ended up exclusively pumping for both.

practice practice practice and keep a burp rag around to quickly cover your breast in case he pops off.

Re: Teach me how to NIP!

Huge congrats on the nursing, so much easier than pumping!

I nursed in public with my first starting around your son's age. I would always wear a nursing tank under my regular shirt, and just lift my shirt and use that to cover the top of my breast. I practiced in front of a mirror until I got the method of latching him quickly without flashing everyone. It works nicely, I've never once used a cover in nearly five straight years of nursing. I now have ZERO anxiety with NIP. None, I will nurse in front of anyone, anywhere and I'm always discreet without making a big fuss about it. Works for us!

Practice and I always kept one hand empty in the beginning. That way when DS would pop off I could quickly cover myself with my hand. I am sure it was obvious but it worked. Also just knowing that he will catch on can help. Also when you are out try to find a spot out of the middle of the room or corner until you really get the hand of it.

Practice in front of a mirror (or a TV that you can see yourself in) from where you are sitting you're getting the 'front row of a strip club" every time your lo pops off - everyone else sees the very PG back of a baby's head.

The first couple of times I NIP I would throw a receiving blanket over both of our heads - I didn't care about attracting attention, I needed to see what was going on down there.

Later I always made sure that I had one hand free to cover the nipple if he popped off. You have to do what YOU are comfortable with - cover, no cover, finding a secluded spot, or not missing out on a minute of the action.

This. I just went for it and I am (clears throat) well endowed! I never flash anyone, and I am discreet as far as showing any skin...though people can tell of course what I am doing. I have to hold my breast (boo) but kinda do this clever trick with my free hand where I hold the shirt securely at the same. Of course in the beginning I had no idea what I was doing, but after a week or two it came together. I will also nurse anywhere...no anxiety.

Happy for you Mama! Enjoy it

Re: Teach me how to NIP!

Wearing a zip up sweater over your shirt helps because you can wrap it around your side to avoid belly flashing. Also, try a floppy sunhat or something similar for baby to cover what you can't. I think there are actual nursing hats you can get for babies too, try googling them. HTH!

I liked nursing in a sling. I loosened it so that the fabric wasn't supporting my baby at all, just more like a blanket wrapped around him and I could pull up the top rail so that anyone sitting across from me couldn't see anything if he popped off, but yet his head wasn't covered, either.

Adopt an, "I don't give a crap", attitude You might flash a little boob here and there, but it's only for a moment. Get yourself psyched before you nurse. Don't look around for disapproving glares. Just look at your beautiful child. Remind yourself how happy and proud you are to be doing this (way to go mama!), and think about how wonderful and special it is and how lucky your baby is to be receiving this incredible gift of nature. Let that all sink in and let the world around you melt away. In that moment when you're nursing your baby nothing else matters!
