Does a bread box really work?

Ever since I discovered "Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes a Day", I have stopped buying sandwich bread and make all my own (if you have not read this book... DO). I've been storing it in tin foil because we don't have any ziplocs (and would prefer not to use them) and it seems to keep it fresh enough to last a few days. The book recommends storing it cut-side-down on a plate to keep the crust crispy, but it seems to dry out a lot faster that way. I think I want to get a bread box to save on the foil, but I want to make sure it will actually work before investing.

Does anyone use one? Do you have wood or metal? Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

I have a wood one and it doesn't work at all. I store mine cut side down on a cutting board, it works better than my box...

I have a plastic bread box, and I really like it. Here's a post abut it: http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/showthread.php?p=11465800#post11465800

I've seen something like that. Do you have any mold problems? Does it vent?

I never found mine to really work so we got rid of it. Can you store the bread in the fridge?

I've heard bread dries out quickly in the fridge, and DH doesn't really want to freeze it.

I've found a breadbox works to hide my bread so I forget I have it then by the time I remember it's stale! So we use the frige so we see it

It gets hard on top, and soggy on the bottom. It's so weird. We only put it in there in the heat of the summer so it won't mold as quickly.

I second the lockn'lock box mama_to_DJM suggested. We use (and reuse and reuse until the slider falls off) a gallon plastic bag, but I have the green light to buy new storage containers (we have all lids not bottoms, go figure) so I think I am going to get one of these too.

Nope, I've never once had bread go moldy in it. It doesn't have vents, I just checked.

I've been wondering this too. I got a bread maker for christmas and was thinking that maybe the Frontier co-op would have re-usable machine washable bread bags... I wonder if Tupperware has a 'bread box'??
