Birthday Party

DD1 and DS are having a joint party next Saturday (bdays are the 10th and 16th). This could be a very silly question, but- Do you do cake or gifts first? All the kids are 4 and under ( mostly 2-ish; we're only inviting our military friends) if that makes a difference...

Re: Birthday Party

We usually do cake first here...when we do family parties (which always have a big lunch with them), we let everyone hang out for a bit & visit while the kids play, then eat lunch, do cake when everyone is done eating, then do presents after cake....but that's mostly because my kiddos would totally ignore cake for new toys any day

We've done it both ways. I've found with little ones though that sometimes doing a few gifts and then taking a break for cake or snacks is way better than trying to get everyone to sit still and focus for all the gifts at once.

We do cake first, and maybe this is just me but we don't have a set "okay it's time for presents!" at parties for young children. Some kids are excited to watch their friend open presents and some can't stand to sit there and watch someone else have all the fun. So really, like age 4 and under I let kids go off and play if they want. Most pop in and check on the progress of gift opening at some point.

Re: Birthday Party

For my 3 year olds party, we didn't open gifts until after everyone left. I feel like it kept the focus on having fun and not the "stuff." Also, I appreciated when we went to other kids parties and they didn't open presents while we were there because I didn't have to hear my daughter talking all the way home about how she wanted all the same presents for her b-day. Not in a greedy way, just that she didn't quite understand that not everyone is going to have all the same toys all the time.

But I know lots of family-type people like to see the kids open the gifts.

Re: Birthday Party

We might be a little different, but we typically serve meals at our birthday parties, so they arrive, we make plates, eat, then we go straight into cake. After we eat cake (we just do it that way because it just makes sense to feed a meal, then dessert), we do presents. I give the kids their goodie bags to open while the kids are opening presents- it cuts down on any present-opening anxiety, jealousy, etc. because everyone has something to open!

We eat the meal, then do cake first. Then we play for awhile, then do gifts.

Meal then games then presents then cake. I don't like to do cake right after the meal bc they most likely are full at that time.

Re: Birthday Party

We don't open gifts at the party. Around here no one does. We do play time, then pizza, then cake, then more play. We do gifts after everyone leaves.
