Goodwill, garage sales and family. We will occasionally buy a new book but it is not the norm. We have a TON of books.

ETA: We go to the library about once a week as well.

I get almost all if our books from the Goodwill or other thrift stores. And sometimes my son gets sent home with library books that were in the discard pile.

Re: Where do you get your children's books?

Come on down to WA and go to Half Price Books. I think there even might be one in Bellingham!

Seriously, I got a $100 GC to there for Xmas 2009, and I'm STILL trying to finish spending the thing! And then they have a warehouse sale once or twice a year in Seattle and have loads of GREAT things that are $.50 to $1.00. I think 3/4 of DD's books are from that single place.

ETA: Whoops, OP, for some reason I misread and thought that YOU were in BC!

Re: Where do you get your children's books?

Most of ours come from yard sales, used on Amazon.com, salvation army, and scholastic book club (DD does home-based early head start, so we get book club orders through them). We also go to the library at least once every two weeks and get a big stack of them as well...but DD has recently started getting into this phase of wanting to color on absolutely everything in sight, so library books kinda scare me right now with her

Re: Where do you get your children's books?

Yard sales are my favorite, they range from 0.25 to $1 max. I remember one epic sale, I walked out of there with a grocery bag full of gorgeous books for $8!! Oh and the one from this summer with a teacher who retired...oh man, that was a great one, beautiful books for like 0.50. I haven't had good luck at our local Goodwill but I don't stalk it, whenever I go they're all picked over and icky.

I'm also in the Children's Book of the Month club, it's not as cheap as used but once or twice a year I place an order when they have specials and I probably average half price of new. And I love paperbackswap.com, sometimes the young kids' books aren't that great but I've been scoring early readers/chapter books for my son, sometimes in perfectly new shape.
