Re: Real Maple Syrup?

I have read though that some 'natural' maple syrup is processed with formaldehyde?

Grade B also is less processed had has more minerals and nutrients supposedly. I prefer its flavor over grade A though.

From what I understand, that is a thing of the past. We get ours at Costco at a really good price.

I got this info from a maple syrup company.

Quote:
Is Formaldehyde used in maple syrup production?
Formaldehyde was used many years ago to help increase the output of sap in the maple trees during the spring harvest. After drilling tap holes in the trees some farmers would place formaldehyde tablets in these holes. The tablets would prevent the tree from naturally closing up the hole causing the tree to produce more sap. At the end of the harvest the farmers would remove the tablets and the tap holes would close up naturally.

Our company does not use formaldehyde, the use of formaldehyde is illegal and if anyone is caught using it the fines are very stiff. Maple farms are government inspected (without notice) on a regular basis and as far as we know no one uses formaldehyde any more.
I'm glad someone posted this question, b/c I have been saving my money to buy organic maple syrup thinking the the regular stuff had formaldehyde. I'm super pumped!

Re: Real Maple Syrup?

awesome! still kinda partial to the organic brand we are a bit addicted to but otherwise good to know, I like our organic one so I had never looked it up, doesn't matter to us, but glad it's not in the other stuff!
