Re: Vit D and pregnancy

I had a VIT D deficiency early in pregnancy so once a week i took a prescription 50,000mg and every other day i took a 2,000 and continue to do so. I live in maine and there is pretty much NO sun so i feel like it helps.

Re: Vit D and pregnancy

Thanks for all your replies. After some more research I've decided to go ahead and take my prenatal plus the 5000 (so 5400 total). I've really been struggling with my moods (and it's affecting my DS quite a bit too), and I'm in SW PA. so very little sunlight here lately. I may see if I can have it added to y script for my blood work that I'm getting in a few weeks just to see what my levels are.

Re: Vit D and pregnancy

I take 4000IU plus the prenatal all Winter long - it's hard to OD on Vit D (you'd have to take upwards of 10,000-20,000 IU/day) and it's cheap. The Vitamin D council has some great stats and info on Vit D and pregnancy, so check out their website.

Re: Vit D and pregnancy

How do you know if you are vitamin d deficient?? Will your doc just run a blood test??

Re: Vit D and pregnancy

I have been taking 5000 IU daily for a long time, my blood test came back within normal ranges but low in summer, and Im fair skinned - so supplementation was necessary. There r two different tests, check the vitamin D counsel website for the name of the correct test (25 hydroxy something). That was prepregnancy. I fell pregnant in May and took the 5000 pills, my prenatal (1000), calcium pills (400) and cod liver oil (has some too). M pregnancy was great and baby grew fine. I did have higher blood pressure the last weeks with my son but this time remained low and made it two weeks farther and had no preterm labor which I had before. All those things have been linked to D deficiancy in some studies....

Re: Vit D and pregnancy

I take 400 (prenatal) + 200 (calcium supps) + 1000 (D supp) = 1600 IU/day

I've read a study in pregnancy that showed good results with doses up to 5000 IU a day, so I don't think that's out of line.
