No Red Dye or Sugar need Snack and Meal Ideas.....

I am not sure if I am in the right spot for this post, but we recantly found out my son cannot have sugar or red dye. I tried going shopping today and it was a total flop. I am not used to having to shop this way so it was very hard and really I don't have many ideas.....everything I looked at seemed to have one or the other....and in many cases both. Even the sugar in no sugar added items was rather high....I have 6 kids does anyone have any ideas of what we can do for meals and snacks even sometimes just for him as he is the only one home during the day. I am at a total loss. Thanks!

To get rid of sugar I imagine you would need to make things yourself, sugar is in SO MANY THINGS! You could probably get sugar free yoghurt, I get one that is sweetened with fruit juice, the lesser of two evils to my mind. I imagine you want to avoid artificial sweeteners also? That, and sugar, would cut out many processed snack foods.

What about more natural sweeteners, like honey, maple syrup, rapadura, palm sugar? Does he have the same issues with them?

What about fruit? Can he have that?

Pretzels?? Ugh, I don't know. That is tough.

Nuts?? Cheese?

Wow, this is hard. Sorry I'm not much help. I'll try to do some research.

Carrot sticks & dip

My daughter enjoys:
hummus (on ww bread, pita chips work too)
carrot sticks
mashed avocado on toast
fresh fruit (blueberries, strawberries, bananas, pears, whatever is in season)
apples dipped in Adams peanut butter
those little containers of flavored applesauce (the 100% fruit kind, no added sugar)
fruit leather (no added sugar)
whole grain crackers

I'm sure there's a few more, I'll have to think....

Oh thank you so much for the ideas...I don't do much with processed stuff, but it is so hard to think of things that do not contain sugar...he can have fruit in moderation even though it is natural sugar it is still high in sugar and he could still have a reaction. I have found several things that are sugar free, but....when I look at other ingrediants they have red dye I am so new to this that it is just hard...I was wondering if anyone else out there had a similar issue....but alot of those ideas for snacks work great....thanks!!!

Re: No Red Dye or Sugar need Snack and Meal Ideas.....

I would go to the health food section if everything you're looking at has red dye... I personally can't even think of a food that would have it!
how about
rice crackers (the puffed kind)
popcorn with nutritional yeast (how old is he? babies can choke on popcorn)
veggie sticks with plain yogurt dip (I mix in a little lemon, garlic, dill, salt and pepper)
cheesy noodles
my DD will eat peas straight from the freezer, and blueberries too.
she also loves a salted wedge of cabbage (which I thought was crazy, but remember, our children are different from us!)
brown rice balls rolled in sesame seeds.
