HELP- car ideas for FREQUENT 5-6 hour rides

My DS will be going to visit his father every other weekend. He lives 5-6 hours from us (one way) and we need car activities.

My son is 3.

sing a long or play a long books, portable dvd player for movies, favorite snacks, mabye stop halfway for picnics at park to burn some energy, driving during naptime/bedtime.

Good luck mama! We had to drive back and forth 5hrs to see my parents often last year so we know what you're going through. It's not as bad as it may seem!

Re: HELP- car ideas for FREQUENT 5-6 hour rides

We take a lot of long drives, and the DVD player has been great. I hesitate to give them a ton of books and things in the car (although we do some) because they turn in to dangerous projectiles if there is an accident.

I had a DVD player installed in the car because I had nothing but problems with the portable ones, and it has been great. It's so simple to use I can change out a DVD as if I was changing a CD in the Cd player. It plays through the speaker system in the car, and each kid has their own little screen in the headrest in front of them.

Re: HELP- car ideas for FREQUENT 5-6 hour rides

I was thinking of the little leaps pen thing that "reads" books

Also Im not sure if he is old eough for the leapfrog game system?

I want to ge thim a dvd player but Im not sure when I can we will see

I plan to take his workbooks with him so he can do some of his "school work" in the car. ....

but I just for see him gettting bored FAST on these trips (they wont occur during nap or night)

we will leave around 3-3:30pm from both places so will be arriving at 9ishpm (depending on stopping and traffic)

Keep your chin up, Mama - some kids that young are happy to just ride for a while, or listen to the radio (you can try kid stories on CDs). He also will probably nap, anyway, even if he doesn't usually nap during the day or this isn't his normal nap time.

Re: HELP- car ideas for FREQUENT 5-6 hour rides

We do kid music (my kids love Laurie Berkner best) and audio books. Storynory.com has a ton for free that you can download and burn to a CD or put on your mp3 player. I put mine on my kindle so I can read and play the audio books for them at the same time.

Both my girls have a Leapster, my 4 year old especially loves it (my 2 year old just likes it because big sis has one.)

I keep the crayola color wonder markers in the car too. And i-spy bags. My 4 year old loves the ABC game too (where you have to find a letter from the alphabet in order outside of the car.) And zitchdog (whoever spots a dog says zitchdog - I stole this idea from How I Met Your Mother, but my brothers and I used to play a variation of it as kids, only it was punch-bug. )

ETA: My four year old also has a kid mp3 player with safety headphones that are a lifesaver in the car when the kid music gets to be super annoying!

We take long trips frequently I use the following:

DVD player
A bag with 2 books and 2 toys of DD choosing
The little leaps book system
Bag of snacks and drinks

I keep everything in DD reach so she can switch activities at will, the DVD player has a remote making change to it possible.

Why not make it nap time for part of it? Like...don't let him nap that day, then he'll konk out when he gets in the car?

We put DVDs on our laptop and got a car power inverter to run it.

Color Wonder markers are awesome because they don't get on anything. DD at 3 colored all the way from Indianapolis to Minneapolis and back for a wedding.

Stickers make a mess, but kids love them.

Good luck! That is a lot of driving for every other weekend!
