Re: Ammonia is getting worse! HELP!

Wash with Tide and hot hot hot water. Keeping doing hot washes and rinses - even going back to reset the knob if you have to. No cold - just keep doing hot, Mama!

I agree with the hot thing, I'd check to make sure you washer fills iwth really hot water. Some people find that the water has cooled by the time it hits the washer. you can always add hot water another way.

Re: Ammonia is getting worse! HELP!

If you have hard water, don't even bother with vinegar.

With my BG organics, this is how I washed them & I never had a problem with them ever. I've been CDing for over 2yrs.

1. warm rinse, or quick wash cycle no soap, because washing your dipes in pee/poo water is just gross. LOL
2. Hottest longest wash cycle you have (I have a FL HE), for about 24 dipes, I use Tide up to the #2 line. Twice a week, add 1/4 cup chlorine bleach.
3. Extra rinse cycle if you feel like it (I never did).
4. Dry them on warm. ( I dry mine on hot, but I'm a rebel. LOL)

I wash my dipes every night. I never let them sit for days, because the pee/poo just soaks right in. gross.

Like others, I believe 'ammonia-stink' is from not cleaning your diapers well enough.
Do a few washes with enough detergent & some bleach to kill the bacteria lingering in your dipes.

**I have HARD town water & before I finally splurged & installed a water softener 3 months ago, I did add 1/4 cup calgon water softener to all my laundry loads, CDs included.

Re: Ammonia is getting worse! HELP!

I've been struggling with ammonia too
I have HH OS (DH faves) and Goodmamas (my fav).
We have no problem with the fitteds, just the microfiber (I'm assuming)
I assumed that the problem was with detergent build up, but now I think I might send the microfibers in with bleach or vinegar to see if that cleans them better.
Since the ammonia started I've added extra rinses in our cycle, but that helped only a little...
Maybe I'll try a new detergent too...

Re: Ammonia is getting worse! HELP!

i agree to use more soap!
but for now, maybe try stripping with dawn dish soap to get them really clean first. just wash on hot with a few squirts of dawn and rinse a couple times.

i use biokleen laundry detergent (get it off amazon, 40 pounds for $43 delivered free!!) and it's really great - all natural and gets diapers really clean. we have well water and don't have any problems. when i used rockin green, i got the ammonia smell too. then i switched detergents and use AT LEAST the full recommended amount for a load of clothes, usually more. you have to consider you're washing dirty diapers, not clothes, so why would you use less soap?

Re: Ammonia is getting worse! HELP!

oh another thing - i started doing WARM pre-rinses instead of cold. i think it helps.. i read in a thread about a cold rinse "sealing in" the yuckies.

not sure if it's true..
