Vit D and pregnancy
Hi ladies,
I've been wondering if any of you take additional Vit D besides the 400 that's usually in prenatals, an if you do how much? I've found a lot of contradicting information regarding this topic, and when I asked my midwife she said she couldn't give me a recommendation I have 5000 capsules already. Would you say that in addition to my prenatal would be a safe amount or too much or should I stick to a lesser amount? (I'm 21 weeks if that makes a difference). Thanks!

Re: Vit D and pregnancy
I took 2000 while pg in addition to the prenatal (500 I think). 5000 sounds like a lot...I know if people are D def they are rx'd around 7,000.

I've been taking 2000 IU for about 12 weeks now and I'm 26 weeks. My OB didn't have much to say on the topic either but I just did some research online.
Eta: I thought my capsules were 2000 each but they are 1000 so I take a total of 2000 plus what's in my prenantal

Re: Vit D and pregnancy
Both my doctor and my MW (when I had one) recommended 2000 total. My prenatal has 1000 so I add another one that's 1000.

Re: Vit D and pregnancy
I take 4000 mg in addition to my prenatal (which I believe has 400 mg). They are in 1000 mg pills so I take 4 of them.

Re: Vit D and pregnancy
I took 6,000 iu a day in liquid form plus the 400 in my prenatal. I take more when I am sick or exposed to someone who is. (I am also deficient so that makes a little difference)

Re: Vit D and pregnancy
I took more, a few thousand IIRC. It is especially important as Vit D can prevent colds and flus.

Re: Vit D and pregnancy
Sometimes I'll take 4000 and sometimes 2000- it depends on what I have on hand. for awhile I was taking 4000 because I was having a lot of mood issues with winter. Then I ran out and when I got some more, I only started back on 2000. There have been some studies that taking around 4000 has lessened pregnancy complications in some women including preeclampsia. It's not going to hurt you either way. In most cases I think 2000 is probably adequate unless you know you're not getting it from your diet, suffer from seasonal affective disorder or have been diagnosed as deficient.

Re: Vit D and pregnancy
I had taken 2000 at the suggestion of my MW - she tested me and my levels were still low so she upped me to 6000 for the duration of my pregnancy and said they'd check me postpartum. I have darkish skin tone and live in the pacific northwest though.
