how much is a doula?

If you had a doula, how much did it cost and was it worth it.

Re: how much is a doula?

Mine cost $350. From the time my water broke to the time I delivered was only 1hr and 45min. I spent 1hr 15min of that in the car driving to the hospital. So even though my doula was only with me for 30min of actual labor at the hospital I still think it was worth it! I was on the phone with her so she could talk me through contractions in the car. Without her I think I would have totally lost it being in the car that long in hard labor.

Re: how much is a doula?

When I priced them here they were $300-$400 depending on experience/types of services offered. I didn't end up doing it at DH's request and I would have felt crowded with one honestly, since I had a MW, student MW, and RN. This time I'll have 2 MWs and a student MW and will probably bypass the doula again. If I were going with an OB or a single MW I'd do it in a heartbeat

Re: how much is a doula?

To add... the 600 included:

2-3 prenatal visits, as needed (2 hours in length, for the most part)
ENDLESS info about prenatal health, birth, newborn care, etc
ENDLESS question answering (THIS is worth the 600 alone)
Birth (comes over any time we wanted her, and stays 2-3 hours after the birth)
2-3 post visits to help with BFing, debrief birth and anything else we need

Re: how much is a doula?

I charge between $600-$750 which is about the going rate in my area. Everywhere is different, the city 3 hours from here Doulas are over $1000 for a birth doula only. As for is a doula worth it...I'm a bit biased here but YES! Also if cost is a concern, you can look for a doula who is doing her certification (they charge less normally) or just talk with the doula, alot of doulas are willing to work out a deal with you.

I think it REALLY depends on your location too, I've seen quite the range.

I am in Western Mass and around here they seem to be about $450 to $800.

Yes, the cost really depends on your area.

The ones I interviewed for my first birth ranged from $300 to $450. Mine was totally worth it.

Re: how much is a doula?

Mine was around $300. She was worth every penny. I would have gladly paid more.
