Help with a friend who smokes and nurses.

My friend has a 1 year old and all he wants to do is nurse. Day and night. I think it could be due the fact that he is hungary because she (Mom) doesn t eat well, she drinks lots of soda and she smokes! He is really crabby as well until he is able to nurse.

Could her milk just be weak in fats and that is keeping him hungary. He (the son) doesn t eat much as far as solids go as well. Her son is also just a string bean. He is long and skinny.

I am not sure what to think. Can nicotine and caffeine get into the breast milk enough to cause him to be addicted as well?

I am just not sure what to say to her. It has been years since I have nursed so I thought I would ask some new pros. lol

Or could it be as simple as he just likes to nurse?

Thanks
Karen

Re: Help with a friend who smokes and nurses.

I'm betting it's just because he likes to nurse. Or, if this is a new thing, perhaps he's not feeling well and is nursing more for comfort.

My DD is tall and skinny and loves nursing. I don't smoke, don't drink soda or caffeine, and my diet is pretty good, if I do say so myself.

I have no idea about your friend or about nursing at age 1 for a smoker. But I had a friend who told me she wouldn't breastfeed because she wanted to go back to smoking once baby was born, I did some research and it seems they say it is even more important to breastfeed if you are smoking because it helps sooth some of the bad effects of smoking. I will go and look for the link.

I think this is where I read it and sent my friend. She did try breastfeeding but didn't do it longer than a few weeks, I think the smoking was an excuse.

I do not think her baby is addicted and using frequent nursing to get his nicotine or caffeine fix. I think he is probably just growing (or trying to grow) and he needs the extra nutrients.

Re: Help with a friend who smokes and nurses.

Sounds like a growth spurt. My niece nurses and smokes and her child is growing just fine. I wouldn't recommend it, but if its a choice of smoking and bf or smoking and ff, I'd still go with bf.

I was wondering about the hind milk as well. I suggested she maybe have her milk tested to find out how much fat is in it. They can do that right?

Re: Help with a friend who smokes and nurses.

I started smoking again while nursing when DS was ... 9 months? Something like that. I wasn't a heavy smoker, but I would smoke 3-6 a day.

I didn't notice a difference between DS nursing/growing before or after I smoked. I also quit again while he was nursing when I got PG again, and he did wean at that point, but I think it was due to the pregnancy.

Some babies just loooove to nurse. All day and all night
