If you think sugar is an ok thing-

Check out the book Sugar Blues:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS.../chrisficti-20

I ordered the book w/ swagcredit and read it in a day- it's been on my reading list forever. Talks about why beet AND CANE sugar is so bad for you and how to get it out of your food. Also a very entertaining read.

Right now the only thing we buy with sugar is bread and spaghetti sauce. I can make my own spaghetti sauce but i SUCK at breadmaking so I'm in a quandary there...

nah.. only thing this made me want to do is chew on some pure sugar cane a wonderful childhood memory. delicious!

oh.. and I would think this belongs in the cooking area or green living??? I don't think it belongs in thrifty, though.

I was posting here because we have had a lot of talk about sugar lately- where to buy it, alternatives etc....

Thanks for posting that! Very interesting, although we absolutely use raw, organic sugar in moderation. There are a LOT of threads in this forum about cooking/baking supplies, etc, so I don't see why it would be an issue to post it here.

The cooking threads in this subforum should be about cooking frugally.

OP: They sell quite a lot of sugar free whole wheat bread. We get it with WIC.

Sugar is another thing I'm trying to cut back on-but baby steps I actually introduced real maple syrup to my kids yesterday on their pancakes, and none of them would eat it But I refuse to buy anymore Log Cabin syrup so they're going to have to learn to like it, or they'll be eating dry pancakes lol!

I make my own syrup...it does use sugar, but it's MUCH cheaper and doesn't have the chemicals of the stuff in the store (that's not organic). I have some organic syrup that I cook with, but I don't like the taste of it plain either. My kids usually eat jelly on their pancakes, but they like to have a little syrup to "dip" their sausages when we have breakfast for dinner.

I don't like real maple syrup either.

My kids like smushed berries or applesauce, stuff like that on their pancakes.

Sara could you try mixing it with the log cabin and slowly adding more of the maple until it is all maple? Once they are eating the maple regularly you could get rid of the Log Cabin bottle.
