Is the "required" hospital stay now 48 hours where you live?
We just moved to Alabama, I'm due next month and dissappointed that they make you stay 48 hours after birth not just 24 hours for just a normal vaginal delivery.
Is this how it is where you live? I am thinking of signing us out AMA, but I really hate to be confrontational, KWIM? Have any of you done that? I just can't sleep well in the hossy....too much noise and bothersome nurses coming it at all hours ![]() Just wondering if 48 hours is "standard" in other areas?

Re: Is the "required" hospital stay now 48 hours where you live?
yeah, they have that in Illinois and when we took the tour before having the baby, the tour guide made it sound like it was a big hassle to leave early...My issue was that they wouldn't let my 7 year old stay overnight (Whom I labored next to and I sleep with nightly), so I had to stay with the baby in the hospital and hubby went home to be with our older son...Yeah, I'd have rather left too. I basically had to lie to the nurse twice telling her that my son was breastfeeding even though he wasn't really interested, otherwise they were REALLY pushing the formula hard!!

I'm pretty sure in Ohio it's supposed to be, but I was only there for 36 hours. And that was even with a baby who had some transitional issues directly after birth. *shrug*

Re: Is the "required" hospital stay now 48 hours where you live?
not where I'm from. I had a couple friends who left the day, within hours... I wasn't quite that ready to head home, but I didn't stay a full 48 hours. I was allowed to stay longer if I wanted though too. Our hospital is small and often very busy, so my doc said I could stay and relax, but I wasn't able to sleep well there.
I wouldn't bother being confrontational about it, personally, but I would ask if it's absolutely neccessary. Good luck!

I live in Oklahoma and at the hospital I delivered you only had to worry about your attending physician and pediatrician. As long they both OK'd you and baby to go you could leave when you wanted. I got to go home 12hrs after delivery and would have gotten to go earlier but the pedi got tied up with another patient. According to the hospital staff it was a mandatory 48hr stay. It didnt matter though, I already had it pre-planned with my midwife and pedi

From my experience there is a 24 hour stay (from the time of the birth) for a routine vaginal birth; 48 hours if you test postive for GBS; and I'm not sure of the required stay for a c-section. You can always leave AMA if you can't take it anymore.

You have the right to leave the hospital at anytime. Its the law. Just like you can refuse any treatments and any time. They have to get a court order to make you stay, and they never do that. Just check yourself out AMA.

Yes that is standard here too but honestly I would stay longer if they would just let me LOL. My nurses have always been super respectful and don't bother me too much. I drive almost an hour to go to this hospital even though there is a hospital just around the corner. I just
it there

I would ask your OB about it. The stay is 24 hours here and they really don't seem to want you hanging around much longer than that!
Be careful if you check out AMA, your insurance can refuse to pay.
