Newborn refusing night feedings?

My son will be 8 weeks on Tuesday. He has taken to refusing night feednigs. He did this before and landed in the hospital for 2 days. NOw he has started again.

He goes 8-10 hours without eating then resumes normal eating in the morning. He wakes up hungry, I try to feed him but he resists and goes back to sleep. I have tried nursing, bottle, even syringe feeding, waking him up. He rejects the nipple or spits the formula/pumped milk back out.

I am not sure what to do, I know he is too small to sleep through the night without eating.

I am of course gonna make an appointment to see the pediatrician, I just wondered if anyone has any advice for the meantime.

Re: Newborn refusing night feedings?

I'm no expert and I don't know your exact circumstances. However, both of my boys now, 21-1/2 months and 5-1/2 months started sleeping through the night 8-10 hours at 8 weeks. The older one was hit and miss, but the younger one has been fairly consistent with sleeping well through the night since that time. Each time I tried to feed them during the night, it completely messed up their day schedule and really was difficult with the same challenges you are facing. Again, not knowing your full situation, if it were me, I'd be calling our pediatrician and ask what they think if it is that concerning, especially with him previously being in the hospital. Many of my friends told me their kids started sleeping through the night (at least 6-8 hours) by 2 months of age.

all of my kids would go through times at that age when they would sleep 8-10 hrs at night and then feed during the day. I would say as long as he is nursing normally during the day count your blessings. It might not last it didn't for my kids. they went through a growth spurt and it was all over. none of them slept through the night after that first growth spurt until they were done nursing.

All of mine started going 8 hours without eating right around that time. I would nurse right before bed, like 10:30 or 11, and by 9 weeks all 3 wouldn't wake or eat until at least 6. As long as he nurses well during the day and has good weight gain, I wouldn't worry about it. Be Blessed in your sleep mama.

Re: Newborn refusing night feedings?

I hope your pediatrician can help you figure out what's going on. I had to wake my son at night to feed him, too. I think he would have slept straight through every night if I hadn't. It can be SO frustrating trying to be a good parent!

Oh he wakes up fine, he even roots, then he gets the boob and his little mouth seals shut. Or he arches his back turns red and screams lol.

If I use a syringe he spits it back out.

I don't get it.

I could understand refusing one for the other but hes not even doing that lol.

And everyone says just be happy he sleeps through, I would rather ensure that he is healthy and eating as often as he should then get more sleep kwim.

so you are not waking him he is waking himself but not eating? Sorry I must have missed that I saw somewhere I thought it said that you woke him. I never wake a sleeping baby ever, but that is just me.
UMMMMMM I am not sure about that one honey. I would def talk with the ped about it though, most babies use it as not only a means of eating but also comfort to get back to sleep. I know that is what my kids did.

Re: Newborn refusing night feedings?

My friend had her LO STTN at 2 weeks!!! EBF!!! And it was HIS decision. She just made sure she offered the boob several times in the afternoon/evening (every half an hour or hour).

I think it CAN be normal... hopefull it is for yours!!

Yeah, if he's waking himself, IDK.
Could he have reflux/silent reflux??

Re: Newborn refusing night feedings?

My DD is 10 days older than your DS and she is doing 6-8 hour stretches at night now so it could be normal but wouldn't hurt to check with your ped.
