Breastfeeding + High blood pressure ?

My BP went up during my pregnancy, never went to pre-eclampsia but it would hover right below 140/90. Now 3 weeks after having my baby it's still up and my bottom number has hit 100 a couple of times. Went to my family doctor today and he really wants me on something for it but is telling me that basically he can't find anything considered safe for breastfeeding mothers. He didn't tell me to wean (and I surely don't plan on it!) but prescribed me a low dose of Lisinopril...which my pharmacist basically said he would really hesitate to fill for me!

So, have any of you struggled with high BP while nursing? What do you take for it? I definitely plan on calling the doc tomorrow to try to get something else.

Re: Breastfeeding + High blood pressure ?

mine went down... and i got pre-e with my babies. I only get it when i am prego. It takes awhile for my blood pressure to go back to normal.. As extra blood and all that... i think it took a couple months before my blood goes to normaly... it goes down slowly for me. Its not just a over night thing, as i worked my way up getting so high in pregnancy doc said it was normaly for me to work my way back down. Breast feeding helps loose weight and so it helped me in my blood back down as well of course... how old is your baby? my doctors All of them ( gave me 3 months with out meds to let it come down ) before they put me on crazy meds...

I would give it a little more time also before starting on any medicine. It can take some time for your body to recover and go back to normal.

I can't think of what I was on when I was pg and nursing but I had high bp throughout the pregnancy and while I was nursing and never had any issues. So there ARE bp rx that you can take while nursing.

Re: Breastfeeding + High blood pressure ?

I have chronic high BP due to having Graves disease in 2005 (it just never went back down) and I take Atenolol. I took it while I was pregnant and still take it. If I don't my BP will go up to the 140's/100. I only take 25mg 2x day and that seems to keep it under control.

I am on methyldopa (Aldomet). I was told it was safe while breastfeeding. (I was on it my whole pregnancy)
