"disciplining" a 1 yr old

My dd just turned 1 and she's really starting to get some attitude. What is the best way to deal with things like throwing, yelling, and pulling? How much do they understand about discipline at this age anyways? Do they understand time outs?
Sorry, newbie...

I don't think they understand time out at all at that age. I personally believe that its damaging to try and discipline such a young child, and with my 1 year old I prefer to use gentle methods of distraction and showing by example. This works well for us & we've had great results.

So how does this "redirecting" work?
I didn't mean to say that I wanted to use harsh methods of punishment. i definitely dont believe in spanking at this age, but i figure there has to be a way, right? I would hate to have one of those children that is running around the store destroying things and controlling their parents.

My almost 19 month old ds is just starting time outs. At 12 mo, I just redirected and held hands (if throwing/hitting) and repeated "no no" in a firm voice...

if he is doing something that he should not be ,..i redirect his attention to something else .. so ie: he is pulling videos off the shelf .. we redirect him to a toy he really likes ..i do say we do not pull those down isaac , not meanly ..does that makes sense ..

I recommend Dr. Sears' "The Discipline Book" ... It is broken down by age group and he does not advocate spanking. Redirect, positive reinforcement, etc.

Check out love and logic for toddlers You can get it from the library It has lots of ideas for that age.
