I really think it depends on the reason. IMO, if you just changed your mind about selling it, that's not ok. But, as long as you notify the bidder of what's going on.

IMO ebay shouldn't allow people to do this at all. Once it has a bid, it should stand.

I can see there being legitimate reasons to cancel--i.e. if you notice the item is damaged, after the fact, absolutely cancel. There could be other legitimate reasons that I'm not thinking of.

Unless there's a very valid reason I don't think it should be allowed. I had to cancel one of mine once because I had listed the item incorrectly as a different size than it was. I emailed the bidders to let them know why I had deleted the listing and apologized.
