fresh veggie question

I am starting to get serious about only cooking from scratch and using fresh veggies and such. My question is if you don't have a year round farmers market, what kind of veggies do you use? Carrots and potatos I get get organic at my grocery store but I realy want to avoid buying canned veggies, like green beans, corn. etc.

Re: fresh veggie question

Do you have a CSA near you? You can get seasonal veggies delivered to your door. The only store I can think of that sells appropriately seasonal vegetables would be Whole Foods. You can also google to see which vegetables are in season and see if your local supermarket carries them.

I buy frozen veggies - we don't touch canned ones. Corn, peas, green beans, etc. All my salad makings I buy fresh, though. Stir fry veggies I buy both fresh and frozen. It also depends what is on sale.

Re: fresh veggie question

Can I ask where you're located? A CSA stands for Community-supported agriculture. It's basically organic veggies delivered to your door from local farms.
Try this - http://www.localharvest.org/organic-farms/

I'm in Iowa. I actually just found a lady that does that here. I'm super excited about it. I have to keep up with our regular grocery store produce spending for the next couple of grocery trips to show dh it would be the same or cheaper.

During the winter, a lot of greens are in season. Mmm- kale.. my favourite! A lot of regular grocery stores or big box stores carry a wide variety of stuff, from kohlrabi to Tuscan kale.
