Good luck!
I would take gauze pads on to help lessen the contact.

Here is a video I found on youtube that shows what the latch is supposed to look like. search on there they have some great diagrams and such as to how the babies mouth should look. my lactation lady kept reminding me to have them look like fish lips.

Re: Is it always going to be this tough

BF is portrayed as wonderful and natural. But, as I have told many a patient (Lact Specialist)...if it were that way, I wouldn't have a job! It's a hole sub specialty so as you can guess it doesn't go swimmingly for most! It can be a lot of work, sweat and tears to get it going. I think a support group is a wonderful idea. And would consider having another specialist assist you. Sounds like you have plenty of milk. If you have any cracking or open wounds, I would recommend getting from your lactation person a Rx ointment to increase healing time. Because when your nipple hurts and you need it to work well every other hr or more, it's important it is in good working order. Also, take a walk (w/o baby), or a bath, something you love for you. Have a glass of wine or a beer -what ever your pleasure (yes this really is ok, 1-2 drinks occasionally), have a GOOD cry, and take a deep breath; for this too shall pass. I have a shirt that says "I make milk, what's your super power?" It really is a super power and you have made a wonderful choice for your baby. YOU CAN DO THIS! Don't be afraid to ask for help! Check the jacknewman.com website, he has some wonderful videos that I think will help greatly.
