cheap copycat for ikea trofast?

I desperately want this:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19858247
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09871292

Our house is not selling, and I'm brainstorming how to organize if we have to stay. Even if we do move and I can therefore afford it, I keep thinking I should be able to design a similar system for less.

The best thing about trofast is the grooves so you can swap out shelves and box sizes easily...

So maybe just a plywood frame with moveable shelves? Then I could buy the trofast boxes- LOVE their lids- to use with it? I need to estimate how much, if any, that would save...

Any ideas would be appreciated! Oh, I do want wood- not plastic or particleboard for the frame.

They have the shelves that hold the cloth boxes in black Target. I saw the boxes in many colors and even some in the clearance section for about $4 each you have search
They also have it in brown or white Here are the boxes

Does the price inclue the boxes? I'm not sure why you would need lids when the space is so small above the box. To make a thrifty copy I would first purchase whatever boxes you want to use then design the shelf.

check out ana white's blog. She posts woodworking plans. She posted a laundry basket holder that I'm sure you could re-work to make it work for storage boxes.

These are cute but they are made of fiberboard, which outgases VOC's and I'm really trying to stay away from them. Otherwise, very cute! Less versatile, though. We need some large boxes for blocks and other bulky toys.

I need lids otherwise my toddler will pull out and dump boxes, and some of these boxes will store science materials and legos for my other son.

I probably will go ahead and buy the boxes, then design shelving. I may buy the bench, though, because it looks so sturdy and I think a window seat would be so much fun in the playroom.

Do you need all those boxes? I know we got a much smaller one for cheaper and it holds a ton of stuff.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00100250

Then we got 6 small boxes, 2 medium and 1 large.

I've seen Ikea's Expedit shelf on it's side often when it comes to this kind of storage...like this:
