how can i get a blister to heal
DS is 2 months old, and pretty good at breast feeding. My left breast was really sore and felt like it was engorged again. He hasn't nursed on both sides at one time since he was like a week old. so I just alternated between sides at every feeding. When the soreness started though I fed him left, left, right, left left right...ect massaging while he ate. Now That the lumpiness/hardness/fullness soreness is gone I noticed that it was really painful when he was eating. So i checked it this am and noticed a white blister looking thing on my nipple. It hurts so bad when he nurses that side(we are back to switching sides at every feeding). Like a pinching/burning feeling.
How can I help it heal? I've been putting lanolin on it. Should i nurse on that side every 2 feeding to help it heal? or just deal with the pain?

Re: how can i get a blister to heal
If you don't feed as much on that side your milk supply will drop for that side and increase on the other. Your breast makes milk based on supply and demand so keep that in mind. I am wondering if maybe you have yeast/thrush on your nipple. Did it itch before the blister? I currently have a yeast on my nipple. It started out itching and blotchy white patches. Now it is so stinken painful, I am actually cracked now. Big ouch! If you don't think its yeast and just a blister from maybe a latch issue (??) or something then I would continue to nurse or pump, that may be less painful. I would also give your nipple plenty of fresh air and put breast milk on it multiple times a day and let it dry. Every time I have ever had nipple issues (except for the yeast- milk is no good in this situation) the breast milk has cleared it up within a day, two max. Hope that helps and you feel better soon!

Re: how can i get a blister to heal
kellymom.com has some great stuff about milk blisters.
Putting a hot compress on it before bf'ing can help the blister to pop, and then there is a suggestion of a salt water soak to help it heal. GL!

Re: how can i get a blister to heal
I second the suggestion to look at www.kellymom.com - do a keyword search for "milk blister" or "bleb." Good luck, those hurt!!!

Re: how can i get a blister to heal
I had a milk blister and almost weaned because the pain was so intense. I didn't address it right away and so my milk got backed up and 'stringy' (according to the LC) in the breast which was very painful. They recommended wearing a cotton ball soaked in olive oil on the nipple in the bra all day (with a pad), and then soaking the nipple a couple times a day in a bowl of warm-hot water. When it's soft, try to pick at it with clean hands or a sterilized needle to open it up (I know it sounds gross, but when you get desperate, this is what you do!) Then pump that side and do compressions to really try to get the milk flowing. You'll need to be diligent about doing this for a few days to a week because these things are stubborn. Good luck!
