Homemade Almond Milk

Hi!
I finally broke down and make my own almond milk...and I love it! My concern is if I switch to homemade milks from store bought milks, how do I satisfy my kids' calcium needs? Their multi-vitamin is excellent, but there's not enough calcium, which isn't a problem w/ the store-bought milks.

Side note: We're all allergic to casein, so cheese is out. Any mamas with similar problems or advice? Thanks!

Re: Homemade Almond Milk

Have you thought of hemp milk?
It has more vitamins/nutrients then almond milk - and I believe more calcium..

Can you make that? (It's cheaper to make almond milk than buy it, and that's really my motivating factor right now!) We didn't like the taste of the store-bought hemp milk.

Re: Homemade Almond Milk

Yes you can.. We do... 1/3c hemp seeds & 3c water (that makes it between skim & 2%), you can add more seeds to make it a thicker consistency..

You can also add honey, agave, etc to make it sweeter.. Or even add fruit to it..

I ordered the nuts from nutsonline -> and it ended up being cheaper then a gal of cow's milk... (I did accidently order the seeds with the shells - so, we just put some in the food processor first - and then use the blender - we also blend/strain/blend/strain.. Just to get the majority of the shells out of the milk..
I've used it successfully in my recipes that call for milk.

Oh - ironically - In one of my groups - someone just emailed saying in 1oz of broccoli, is the same amount of calcium as 1oz of cow's milk.

I'll look for the links that show the nutritional value of each type of milk...

Re: Homemade Almond Milk

You can get chewable calcium vitamins as well. I think I've seen them on luckyvitamin.com...?

Re: Homemade Almond Milk

I think better - since, you can adjust to your own taste (how thick, how sweet, etc)

My DD - LOVES it, hubby and I - well, we never drank much milk to begin with.. LOL - So, we really just have it for DD to drink, and for cooking/baking..

I've had no problem using it for cooking/baking...
