How well do Genius One-Size pockets work for heavy wetters?

I was hoping to reuse my Bum Genius 2.0 one-size pockets for kid number 2 who was born last fall. I had used the diapers all day and night with my daughter for about 18 months.

However, with my son, I am getting a lot of leaking around the leg gussets. He is super chunky (think sumo wrestler thighs) so it's not as if we don't have a good fit. Sometimes, within 30 minutes of a change, he's already leaked through his clothes, which means going through lots of clothing changes in a day.

I'm trying to figure out if he's just too much of a heavy wetter for the BGs or if they're too worn out to work as well for him as they did for my daughter.

Opinions?

Check and see if the inside of the PUL is still smooth and sealed. Then you could check to see if the suedecloth is repelling- see if water runs off of it- if it does do a super hot wash with dish soap and rinse several times.
Otherwise you just might need more absorbancy- try adding and hemp doubler or going to a different insert- BG flip organic inserts are great but can be rather bulky and stiff on a younger baby.

sounds like you've got build-up in your inserts or some sort of repelling issue ... the same thing was happening to me and I did 3 hot washes in a row (until I didn't see any suds during the agitation phase -- once the agitation bubbles disappeared) and it solved the problem.

I agree, sounds like buildup to me. I would strip and see if that helps.

try stripping them. My LO is a HEAVY wetter (but long and skinny) and my BG's have never leaked.

It is very easy to tell actually. If the insert is soaked when you take it off, you need more absorbency. If the insert is partially dry, you may have a fit or absorbency problem. FYI, suedecloth is one of the most difficult materials to do a "repel test". If you pour water on it, the water is very likely to roll right off and not soak through. Suedecloth really needs the pressure of a baby bottom to push the wetness through the material into the insert. Good luck!!

I think that's it. The diapers are not repelling and I've tried double stuffing. Sunday he leaked through in about 30 minutes, and when I laid him down for a change, I saw that the leg gussets gaped quite a bit.

He has super chunky legs and weighs almost 19 lbs. I have the diapers snapped to the middle setting. So I'm not sure that this is an issue with the rise, right?

Bummer. I was so excited to be saving all this money on not buying new diapers for him.
