If you had a bum-scooter baby...

...did he/she ever crawl, or did he/she just go from bum-scooting to walking?

My little ds is quite proficient in bum-scooting and I don't see him making any efforts to crawl because this is really working for him. I know some people say that crawling is an important part of development and if kids skip it, they skip some important "connection" that will impair something cognitive later on (can you tell that I don't understand the specifics?). What are your thoughts on that? If you have had babies who skipped crawling, do you notice any cognitive or motor differences between them and kids who did crawl?

DD was a butt-scooter (from about 7mo to 11mo) crawled for about a week and then started walking. She crawled more after she walked and left the butt-scooting behind once she started walking. She seems just fine and her motor skills were always either right on track or advanced, definitely didn't make her 'miss out' on anything that I can tell.

I don't have any kids old enough yet but I was a bum scooter who never crawled and I was walking at by a year. Never had any issues b/c of it. I don't think you have anything to worry about. My little guy HATES to be on his belly so I'm thinking he will also be a bum scooter!

Re: If you had a bum-scooter baby...

My nephew was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at about 2 years of age. Up to that point we knew he had some sort of disability mostly because my mom had worked with handicapped children for many years and recognized the signs soon after he was born, but it took a while to pin point his condition.

One of the signs was an inability to crawl because he lacked necessary coordination. He scooted around on his cute little bottom from about 8 months to 2 1/2 years when he started to walk. As an infant he was very active on one side of his body and quite slow on the other side. Also, he never grasped things with both hands, always one or the other.

I don't by any means want to scare you or anybody, but getting your little one evaluated by a pediatrician who specializes in special needs might be a good idea. If you recognize even one minor irregularity it might lead to something bigger. That said, I'm not saying there is definitely anything wrong, just that it is worth looking into. We are very lucky in that my nephew has been in physical therapy since birth and is now 12 years old and is really quite normal because of early intervention.

Hope that helps

My DD didn't crawl at all.... she started butt scooting at 14 months, and walked at 19 months.... and she's a totally normal almost 3 year old now. There are huge ranges of "normal" behavior, so I wouldn't worry too much

Re: If you had a bum-scooter baby...

I had one daycare girl who only bum scooted til way over a year. I threatened to stick a swiffer on her bottom and let her clean my floors.

She's seven now, it never slowed her development at all.

My DD was a bum scooter, as was her grandfather and cousin (in the genes?). She scooted for a long time. Crawled for a couple days and said the heck with it and walked (a confident walk at that). She was a late walker (19 months). Some people might say thats a delay, but they don't know her. She is very cautious. She was walking holding on to furniture and our hands walking, but would not let go. Her vocab is off the charts and does not favor one side or another physically. I am a teacher and work with kids everyday, they are all different. If you are concerned talk to a trusted doctor or early childhood specialist. Now more than ever I believe you must know the child, temperment and all.

My brother was a bum-scooter. He went straight from scooting to walking with no issue. My sister was a roller o.o She rolled from place to place like a rolling pin, and went from that weirdness to walking as well. You could ask your provider, but it seems perfectly normal to me.

My sister was developmentally delayed due to seizures and she was a bum scooter never crawled and started walking about 18 months I think. Our ped said even if she wasn't delayed it was no worry to him
