Outdoor toy recommendations for 12-18 mo olds?

The grandparents are asking for gift ideas for DS's 1st birthday, (in about a MONTH - I can't believe it!) and I'd love to get him something to play with outdoors. I'd like something that will *hopefully* keep his interest for a while, and preferably something that he could still use next year too.

Currently we have a toddler swing & a little inflatable baby pool.

My stepmom wanted to get DS a sandbox, but I suspect he's a bit too young for that... but he would still enjoy it, I'm sure. I also thought of one of those playhut things, because that would keep him shaded no matter where we were in the yard & would be easy to move around the yard.

What are your DC's favorite outdoor toys???

Re: Outdoor toy recommendations for 12-18 mo olds?

DS loved his sandbox. He got it when he was 14 months and never had a problem. This year I want to get the kids a ball pit thing(a small one) and a new sandbox (I need one for 4 kiddos) and possilble a bigger paddling pool. Other things I like for that age are sprinklers (kid fun ones), big balls to chase around, maybe a slide. The play hut sounds like a lot of fun!

My 16 m old loves his sister's cottage, and plays in it every day. He also likes his foot powered car and climb on slide/fort thing. All those things would last at least a couple years.

oh yeah, if you do a sandbox, don't bother with the little plastic ones at the store. complete waste of time and money. Dh built ours, and it's great. It 4x8 feet and has a seat on each corner. it can easily accomodate 4 kids and their tractors and shovels. We got sand delivered and the total cost for wood and sand and hardward was less than $100.

Well I haven't let Tharen in the sandbox yet, he would definately eat the sand. But he loves the Little Tykes climb and slide, and the Cozy coupe truck and the play house. All of them are great fun and are still good for Kearnan who is 5.5.

Re: Outdoor toy recommendations for 12-18 mo olds?

I got my son this water table for his 1 yr (in May) and he loved it. By the end of the summer he did climb into it. Was very stable.

Also any kind of riding toy that can be pushed. We have an older one of these. Ours is 12 years old and still works great. My ds will be 2 in May and he still loves it.

Hope this helps

i actually totally would go for the sandbox! my ds loved it at 14 mos and up he did try to eat the sand but i just kept repeating it was for playing, and he mostly got it! but he could spend all day in it! (make sure the kiddie pool is up to rinse em off after tho!) also balls are great sprinklers and those little plastic things that are like little boxes that you can climb in and around on are great (don't know what they are called sorry!)
