Age for back carries?

How young is it typical to start back carries? I have a toddler and a nearly 3 month old. Looks like we're going to be moving soon. I am thinking that I could get a lot more done if I put my infant on my back. I've done plenty of BWing with my two guys but mostly front carrying.

Would love any advice. I would likely use either my Ergo or my Didymos wrap.

My bwing educator says when they can lay on their tummy and lift their and look either direction. I would think on your back in your didy would be perfectly fine

Re: Age for back carries?

I started using the Ergo back carrier when my son was 5 months. I tried the baby hawk with him on the back and could not stand the straps cutting into my waist. I say if you can hold the baby on your hip and he looks around by twisting his head well, he's ready. It is so much better on your back and a lot easier to do things! Good luck!

With your didymos wrap you can do back carries with a newborn. If you go to youtube and search newborn high back carry or infant high back carry you can see some demo videos.

You can wrap your baby on your back now. This YouTube user has at least three different demonstrations for a newborn on the back, and you can totally use those methods for a nearly 3-month-old as well.

What size is your wrap and what size are you? Some back carries need a little bit longer of a wrap than other carries.

I put my DD on my back when she was 4 months, and my DS on my back when he was a newborn (but not often since he was eating all the time, lol).

Re: Age for back carries?

LO is 4.5 months and we just started doing back carries(in woven) for short periods of time. It's hard to get him comfy back there but I'm getting better
Just try it and see how it goes!

Re: Age for back carries?

Thanks for the advise and links, ladies. I will check them out sometime when my toddler isn't climbing on me.

Harmony96 - It's a 6 if I recall correctly. Quite long although not the longest they make. I got a long wrap to have the versality to do many carries. I just never got around to figuring out the back thing.
