Re: milk, whole? 2% Skim?

The nutritionist I spoke to a while back suggested whole milk until age 2, 2% until age 4, 1% until age 6, and skim after that. I think we'll just stop at 1%, but obviously this is for typical kids with typical diets, and just a suggestion.

Re: milk, whole? 2% Skim?

we do whole milk mixed with cream for our daughter and I doubt we will switch her to anything other than whole anytime soon as she has growth and weight gain issues

I do whole for DD. She is 4, only 35 pounds, and skinny. She needs the fat.

Re: milk, whole? 2% Skim?

It always used to be recommended whole from 1-2, then 2% from 2-4, then whatever you want. Now they have started to switch it up a bit based on how much the kid actually weighs and eats.
With ODD we did whole until 2 and are still on 2%. I don't know if we will switch her to skim (what we drink) at 4 or if we will leave her on 2%... She is a tiny one, so we might stick with the 2%.

We do whole milk here, organic to boot, in moderation. She gets 2 cups a day of milk.

I think I was told by someone that at 2 they switch to you only being able to 2%1% or skim and that whole isn't even an option....just what I heard so not sure if thats true

Re: milk, whole? 2% Skim?

Our WIC specifies what we can get

0-1 no milk
12 months -24 months Whole milk only
24months-5yrs they get 1% or Skim only.

We buy Whole milk from the baby's checks (he does not drink it, he is on whole human milk LOL) and 1% from DD's checks. I give the whole milk to the kids to drink and DH or I will use it in cereal. I cannot drink it straight. LOL

Re: milk, whole? 2% Skim?

DH and I, and our kids when they get old enough, drink skim. My youngest turned 2 a couple months ago, so at that point we switched her from whole to 2%. However, the little stinker decided that she will only drink our milk (the skim), so that's what she gets now. She can even tell the difference between 1% and skim! LOL

So we do 2% for a little while, then switch to skim.
