3yo = difficult napper

I've always had a hard time with sleep & my 3yo. He went through a phase somewhere around 18-24mo where I couldn't get him to sleep for a nap for anything. He got better, but now he's a little over 3yo and he's resisting naps, BIG time. His still *REALLY* needs his nap. Any suggestions?

Sometimes quiet time is enough to recharge them at that age. Lay down with him and tell stories or cuddle up and watch a show with him.

My DS, who's 2, doesn't always want to nap either but really needs it. I agree that just a little quiet time can do wonders. If they don't want to take a nap they probably won't but if you can get them to sit down and relax, maybe in a dark room it helps. Sometimes if I'm really desperate I resort to driving around in the car until the kids fall asleep. Hugs, I hope you figure something out.

He could be phasing it out all together. Yes he'll be tired at the end of the day and cranky as can be, but after a few days when they adjust to not napping it goes away. THey may go to bed earlier than they had with the nap but they adjust to that too.

For those who don't nap, what kind of bedtime do they have?

Re: 3yo = difficult napper

I did a daycare class with 3 year olds. What I did was play a lullaby cd on repeat, and had them face whichever way was least interesting. Really, with the cd after a week, they all feel asleep by the 3rd song! Kind of that pavlovian (spelling?) dog thing.

I would go by his cues. When he starts winding down a bit but isn't over tired, try to lay him down. Tell him that he doesn't have to sleep, but he needs to lay there and rest for a while and when it's time to get up you'll come get him. Make sure he's done lunch/snack, drink, and potty so there aren't any reasons to get up, kwim?

We don't vaccinate, we kept our sons intact, we use cloth diapers, we co-sleep, we extended RF, we breastfeed, but we watch too much tv and I totally dig plastic! Everyone has their issues, lol.

Re: 3yo = difficult napper

Two of my three gave up naps at age 2. I just got them to lie down on the couch with a blanket and whatever lovie they had and watch a quiet show, like Winnie the pooh or Blues clues for a while. Once in a while they fell asleep usually they lay quiet and unwind.
Bedtime for preschool age in my house is 7pm. Dd wakes about 7.30am so gets lots of sleep.
