At what age is gum appropriate??

I'm just curious at what age you would/did give your child gum to chew. A FB acquaintance posted a pic in which her 3 yr old is clearly chewing gum and I just can't imagine my 3 yr old being responsible enough to not swallow it or have it end up in the sheets or something. Just wanted to get some input from others on that

Re: At what age is gum appropriate??

My youngest DD started having gum when she was 4 (she's now 5). After the first time it ended up in her hair and I had to cut it out she's been super careful with it LOL. IMO I don't think anyone NEEDS gum, but my mom loves to give the kids gum, so they get it when they see her, which is probably once a week. It's not a huge deal to me. It's not terrible, but it has no benefit either. It's one of those parenting things I just let go, kwim?

Re: At what age is gum appropriate??

My DS loves gum, but he didn't start chewing it until this year (he is 4). I did let him try it a few times just before he turned 4 but he just swallowed it. My DD on the other hand...she is not quite 2 and will chew on a little piece of gum for *HOURS*. I didn't purposefully give her gum the first time, but she found some in my purse one day (she is a serious food scavenger! ), and now anytime DS has some gum (not often at all. Like right now, because I have a pack of gum in my purse, he might get a piece a couple times this month, but when it runs out he probably won't get any for another few months), she begs for a little bit of it, too. On Sunday she had a little piece that she literally chewed for about 2 hours. She does need to be reminded not to pull it out of her mouth (she likes to stretch it out), but she does pretty good with it. She's a funny thing, though. She actually will chew on bits of paper/napkins and tell me, "I chewing gum!"

I won't let my children chew gum because I stopped when I gave up artificial sweeteners and it is almost impossible to find gum without aspartame. We do get some occasionally from our health food store, but I am sure I had aspartame poisoning from gum/diet coke and we don't have it here. But, I think three is young as well.

Maybe I'm just overprotective? DS1 still swallows his toothpaste (which is a whole other thread lol), so I just can't see giving him gum

Re: At what age is gum appropriate??

3 for dd...early 3 maybe late 2 bc I was pg. I remember taking a pic of her with her first piece of gum. She's only swallowed very few pieces and never made a mess with it. She's super mature for her age.

Eta I took the pic feb 27, 2010 so she was almost 3!

Re: At what age is gum appropriate??

uuummmm Its a parental choice and I say NEVER!!! LOL I being the Mom of kids who like to Pull and string their gum, Forget to spit it out or flat Hide it and then fall asleep with it in their mouth for MOM to have to get out of the hair clothes and bedding the next day...
They blow HUGE bubbles and them Smash them into the others face and cause more mess. Im WAY anti-gum for Kids for plenty of the Above reasons... But as a General Rule of thumb I say if your child knows not to swallow it and doesn't play with it no harm...
BTW My kids are 15(which chews gum) the others are 10 9 7 NONE of which are allowed to chew

I'm not sure when DS started chewing gum, but he is not allowed any more. We recently moved and while I was packing his room I found about 25 wads of gum stuck random places They were everywhere from behind his headboard to behind his DVD player!

Oh, and DD doesn't get gum yet because she is only 2.
