gauging interest sleepy owl (and others!) crocheted hats
i am in love with making hats! i recently found a hat i really wanted to make for a friend of mine. i saw it in an etsy shop, did a search, and found that there were several sellers on etsy making similar hats, and some selling patterns. anyway i did not buy a pattern but made the plain earflap hat i always use to make all my hats then added the pieces. i've made several animal hats but these are my favorite by far. since the market seems to be pretty well saturated on etsy i thought i'd try selling here. what do you ladies think?
![]() its a crappy cell phone pic and you can't tell but the accents are pink, the color is darker IRL. Have you seen anything sold on DS like this? I would love to make and sell other styles of hats, other animals and photo props, boyish newsboy and aviator hats (everyone is looking for more cute boyish stuff!) and of course girly hats with huge flowers, hat and diaper cover or hat and cocoon sets, booties...though mostly hats, thats my fav! the trouble is on DS i see crochet items going for ridiculously low prices. i can't spend 5 hours on a hat and charge 15ppd. on etsy i've seen them VERY high, but i have sold them locally for $25-$35. I can't see selling them for less than $20 plus shipping. would you pay that much? i wish i had more pics of my work to show! i also love doing little amigurumi animals and dolls, but they are even more time consuming because of having to sew all the body parts and clothes together. i've even made a few with bells inside but i would need to practice more with those to feel confident enough to see.

Those are so darn cute!!! If it wasn't 80-90 degrees already for 9 months of the year, I would love to get one for my two dds. I wish you the best of luck. I like that the owls' eyes and noses aren't knitted as one single piece of the hat, but are separate, gives it a good dimensional (is that the word I'm looking for??) look!

lol i know its the WORST time ever to start a winter hat business!
I wouldn't really start until the fall when both girls are in school a few hours a day, so i figure there will be a little more interest at that time!

Re: gauging interest sleepy owl (and others!) crocheted hats
Super cute! We live in TX where it's never cold either, but that didn't stop me from buying my 2 yo a crocheted Elmo hat a mama was selling at my dd's school winter festival, just b/c I was there, and it was cute, and I was trying to get her to stop fussing! LOL... so I think there is a market, locally if nothing else.

I've made hats like that and sold them locally.
I think $25 is perfectly fine, since its hand made

I think people would pay $25. I would if I wasn't already a crocheter.

I love those hats! I am a nurse who works nights as a hospital supervisor and I can tell you that every department has an obcession with owls. Also I would market to photographers for props plus if the parents love the hat the photographer can give them a card to contact you!

SOO cute. I probably wouldn't buy because we're in sunny so cal. But maybe if you made wide-brim hats that were light-weight...
