Depo provera -tell me your experiences
So I am 6 weeks post partum and nursing. It's time to start birth control again and I've gotten a prescription for depo provera. But now I'm feeling a little nervous about it. We want to have another baby in 2 years... But I know it can take a long time to wear off. What are your experiences with the shot, its effectiveness, weight gain, and getting pregnant after stopping the shots?

Don't do it. Depo is evil. It made me feel crumby. No sex drive. And it took a whole year to get my AF back afterward. If you want to go hormonal I think you are better off with the pill or even mirena they at least get out of your system much faster if you ate TTC again. This is all my experience and opinion of course.

Re: Depo provera -tell me your experiences
Yeah I gotta agree w/ the pp, DON'T DO IT!!! It made me gain 30lbs in one freaking month, that stuff is horrible. My midwife won't even give it to people b/c of all the crappy side effects. Look into the Mirena or even Implanon if you have to, but depo is horrid.

My OB won't give it because of the weight gain, one of my friends gained quite a bit of weight and then had to take estogen after to try and get her cycles back. :-/

Wow, so it's not very well liked, huh? I had the mini pill before and didn't have any side effects-and the shot is supposed to be the same hormone. So the side effects are worse? Anyone have experience with both the pill and shot (not simultaneously, obviously)? Did anyone out there like the shot?

Re: Depo provera -tell me your experiences
I did the mini pill after DD and had zero side affects from it. I did Depo after DS and I would not recomend it to anyone! It is horrible! I had so many side affects from it. When I first got it I had all early pregnancy symptoms, small weight gain, and easy aggitation...That was the easy part. When going off of it, I again had the pregnancy symptoms(I have read this is VERY common), aggitation, and added migraines. My OB said it's like your body goes through withdrawl from it
Not fun! I had only one round of Depo and I am STILL having issues getting my cycle regular and my shot was last June...I can't stress enough DON'T DO DEPO!

Re: Depo provera -tell me your experiences
I have done the depo shot at two different times in my life. The first was fantastic, i was young, no children, and led a high energy life style. I had no weight gain, and no periods (woohoo!)..then i met my husband, married, and we TTC..it took 13months to conceive DD (which kinda sucked, went on BC for 2 months to get a regular cycle)
Fast forward to after our second child, i tried depo again after his birth. No periods, no noticable side effects, but i had a hard time dropping wieght. Then DH deployed and i did not get a third shot and wow, dropped 10lbs in about 2 weeks! I think the depo was holding onto it. I did see that depo is no longer recommended at my doctors office. I assume b/c it's the effect on the bones and loss of calcium I have tried Mirena and could never recommend it. I had it for 3 months and it was afwul. Mood swings, violent thoughts, no s3x drive, spotting the entire time, weight gain and bloating...i couldn't get it out fast enough.

Yeah, I'm most nervous about not being able to get pregnant again when I stop getting the shot. Weight gain would not be pretty either, but that concern is definitely secondary.
Darn, I was so excited about not having to remember pills every night. Ugh. I'm thinking I'll probably have to call for a different prescription tomorrow... Any more experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Depo provera -tell me your experiences
Depo sucks! I got my shot in March at my 6 week checkup. I will never do it again! I have bled since I had DS, but I personally know its not a period. I mean I'm 13 weeks PP. My bleeding had stopped when I went in for my checkup! I'm EBF, so I guess I'll go with the mini pill next time. I can't stand bleeding, and don't want the added hormones that can "stop the bleeding". Whatever. I'm mad I got the darn thing!
