Mirena IUD

Has anyone had this and it affect your supply? I know a lot of mommas haven't liked it for lots of other reasons. I had it before this latest baby (got pg within 6 weeks of getting it removed) and I really liked it but I wasn't nursing a baby when I got it so I don't know about the affect on supply although my OB said it wouldn't. I'm not sure I fully believe him. Anyone have experience on this?

Re: Mirena IUD

I had DD July 4th, had mirena placed August 28th. I have been EBFing the whole time. I never experienced a drop in my supply or anything affecting BFing. I too was skeptical about getting it but my doc assured me this would have no effect on lactating. So for me, it works. DD is 10 months old and we are still EBFing along with pureed foods.

Re: Mirena IUD

A friend of mine has had one after both of her babies and has breastfed both of them past a year. I hear that the level of hormones is so low and localized that it *shouldn't* affect supply.

Re: Mirena IUD

I am an RN and my DH is a pharmacist. Why Mirena doesn't affect your supply is b/c it is, yes localized hormone, but more importantly b/c it is only progesterone. No estrogen. It is estrogen that messes up milk supply. I am on it for the first time while nursing and I also have my best supply this time! But I am also on more motilium this time, but still...

I had a Mirena for 2 years while my DS was BFing. I never had supply issues, or any side effects.

Thanks! That's good to know. Iwas reading the LLL breastfeeding book and it seemed to suggest it could. Maybe it was talking more about a mini pill or something.

Re: Mirena IUD

I have the Mirena also and was concerned about the hormones too (mostly because the ones in the Pill make me moody!). I haven't had any problems with supply due to it, but have had random spotting.

No problems here either. I got mine 8 weeks PP and still EBF and pumping while at work with no issues at all.
