Re: Do they teach cursive where you live?

Not taught here, unless a teacher weasels it into the day somehow. I taught spec ed and fit it in with the kids who were able. My DH teaches grade 6 and does it as bell work.

I think it has value. Kids who learn to cursive write tend to print more carefully and more legibly, even if they choose printing overall. I also think it is important to be able to read cursive writing. Some kids really enjoy learning how to cursive write.

But then, I struggle with giving things up because of technology.

Re: Do they teach cursive where you live?

My 6th grader said he doesn't see the point in learning cursive. He claims he never uses it anymore and can hardly remember how!! I'm not sure how true that is, but that's what he says. We use the D'Nealian printing here too, btw. This is very interesting to me. I should have done a poll!! So far there has been 15 school districts where it is still taught and 5 where it isn't, including me and my sister.

My kindergarten son has already been introduced to cursive! Seems a bit early to me

They teach it here. Introduced a little in 2nd grade, taught in 3rd. I think they need to learn it - I think you can write faster in cursive than print. How are they going to take good notes in classes if they can't write as fast. What about letters from people who do use it?

Re: Do they teach cursive where you live?

I'm not sure if it's taught here, but DD taught herself over the winter with little help from me.

Re: Do they teach cursive where you live?

They've stopped teaching it in Palm Beach Co., FL (south fl). I don't think it's a big deal, though I do wonder how these kids will learn to sign there signature?

Taught in 3rd grade around here. However, it doesn't have the emphasis it did when I was going through school (but that was in a diff state, so I can't be sure abt the comparison here).
