WWYD long car ride question...

We leave friday for vacation which means a 9-10 hour car ride. DD is 3.5 and I think will be fine as long as I bring plenty of books, games, snacks, etc...

DS is 19m and he's the one I'm worried about. I think I can keep him entertained or sleeping a good part of the time, but the problem is, he gets car sick. He vomits in the car at least once a week but often more. Especially right now b/c he's got sinus drainage and he chokes on it and throws up. We've started just putting one of those huge armed toddler bibs on him every time we get in the van and making sure we always bring a towel and change of clothes.

So my question...would you turn him around for this trip? He's still rear-facing and I'd like to keep him that way for safety, but I would also love to keep him from puking on himself. Do you think it would help? It would be great if I didn't have to worry with cleaning his car seat cover while we're away from home.

Either way you turn him he will puke on himself. I don't have any good advice for the puking. Have you tried those wrist bands with the pressure things? I know it would be hard to keep them on him but it may be worth a try. I get motion sickness if I read or knit or do really anything but I have found those work really well.
We take a LOT of car trips since we don't live very close to any family. We have found that stopping every couple of hours and getting out of the car and playing at a rest area, picnic/resturant (not fast food) really make the trip go by faster. I know it sounds crazy because it makes the trip longer but you really don't feel like you have been in the car all day. It will help keep ALL of you sane

I agree he would probably still throw up if he was forward facing. Are you against giving him gravol?

Sea bands, Ginger snaps and possibly a trip to the pediatrician to get something that you may not have to use, but can keep on hand.

Peppermint helps sometimes too. So maybe small candies or crushed/broken mints.

I'd just start thinking of all 'morning' sickness solutions and try them.

I'm not convinced he would throw up if you turned him. Could you try him turned around for a few days before you left to see if the situation improved. I don't know if any of you ahve even had motion sickness but the direction you're facing can have HUGE impacts on whether you get sick or not. Poor little guy. I hope you find a solution either way.

Re: WWYD long car ride question...

DH gets more car sick if he reads or something like that. If he is looking out the window, he does much better. So I would say try to think of games he could play like I spy or something like that....keeps him looking up and around. I honestly wouldn't turn him around. He is still pretty young.

Re: WWYD long car ride question...

I might look into the seaband thing, if I can find them here locally.

For those concerned with his safety, I know he's much safer RF but I also know we are statistically less likely to be in an accident on a road trip than driving around town at home. We would not be permanently turning him...it would just be for the trip. We did this w/ DD when she was around the same age on vacation (we were in someone else's car and the seat didn't fit RF).

What is gravol?
