This age it normal, but real life can affect these dreams. I know for my DD she has intense night terrors about a bee on her pillow. And she's quite fascinated by bees. Also, she will see something that to me is quite benigh and then have a nightmare about it. Her imagination just takes it to a different level.

Given your general concerns about him being with biodad, therapy probably a good idea anyway. Even if nothing is happening to him, he may still be processing the emotional effects of split households and it's coming out in his dreams (nightmares).

Really sounds like bad dreams to me. We've had a few night terrors here and the real problem is that the kids aren't all the way awake when you're trying to comfort them. As OPs have said, could be some scary media that he saw or could be something you need to worry about from his biodad. Definitely follow up, but it is an age for things to worry kids in their sleep.
