Your opinion please... (kinda long sorry)

DD fell while at her dads and slammed her face into the headboard of his bed. It caught her right on the "apple" of her cheek so kinda right below her eye socket. She had a nice black eye for weeks. By Easter it had toned down but there was still a little mark where the actual impact was which I attributed to A) being the impact site and B) the fact that it broke skin right there. While at the B&B we stayed at for Easter DD hit what we assume to be the same spot (on her face) on the headboard just after we had laid down to go to sleep. It was pitch dark so neither the ex nor I saw what happened..whether she rolled over into it or sat up and slammed her face into it (again). This caused a bruise to come up in the same spot that there was still a bit of a red mark from the previous incident (about the size of a nickle). So here we are like a month post the second incident and this kid STILL has what appears to be a bruise there. My mother keeps saying she feels a knot underneath said bruise. I lightly pushed on the apple of her other cheek where there is no bruise and asked if it hurt..she said no. I did the same thing on the side with the bruise and she promptly says it hurts and pulls away. She also will tell you and point to her "owie". There is no way that thing should still be there and still hurting right? I wonder if the intial slam to the face fractured something? It seems such a minor thing now but I am wondering if there is a fracture the doc needs to x-ray and see whats going on. Just looking for opinions bc I don't want to take DD in and the doc think I'm nuts.

Couple of days after the first incident

The week before Easter (2-3 weeks post first incidentt)

A few days after the second incident

A few days ago..hard to see but its just about the size of a dime and darker than her natural skin color. A lot easier to see in person.

I would probably take her in and have it checked out just in case.

It's been 3ish weeks since the 2nd incident & she says it hurts when you push on it, I'd take her in.

You can always call your pediatrician and say you have a question for a nurse. They should be able to give you a good idea of whether you should go in or not. If you are worried though, taking her in can't hurt!

My son had a shiner in that same spot and it took months to go away. Even if it is broken they can't fix that bone.

If there was a chip present you would be able to feel a small hard lump that moves under the skin in that area. My best guess is that she bruised her cheek bone. It is possible to do that. If it is a bruised bone it will hurt for quite some time. If you are really worried I agree with the pp who said call the pedi and ask to speak with a nurse. They will probably say you should go in to have it looked at anyway.

This.

The only thing that could be done would be to wired her mouth shut. They'd do that to an adult (BTDT), but I doubt they'd do that to a kid. I'm not even sure she has teeth (that they'd attach the wires to).

Just understand. If you take her in and explain what happened the way you did here, a doc or nurse may feel it is their duty to report to CPS. It is only your word saying this is how this bruise (or worse, broken bone happened) so some of the more zealous required reporters will make a request for an investigation especially if they see too much of this kind of thing.

Not trying to discourage you. Just saying that it is possible.
