Parents living with s/o or step families

I was wondering how other families do it, especially those that the other bio parent is actively involved.

Me and my 2 boys live with my bf and his dd, we have been living together for over a year. I'm never getting married again, one divorce was enough, and we are not having kids together

Both of us have shared custody of our kids. Our kids go to the other parent during a set day during the week and every other weekend.

We are all a family but we still definitely do things separate too. Sometimes this is because we only have my boys or his dd, or my bf's gone on a trip. I wonder if this normal. I still "parent" his dd a lot of the time and does the same for my boys but there is no question who "the parent" is. It seems to work pretty well right now, kids are 5, 6, and 6.
