At what age would they not sedate a child for a cavity filling?

I think we just found a small cavity on my DS's tooth He is 5 and I am worried that they will want to anesthetize or sedate him in order to fix it. How old was your LO when they had a cavity filled and did they sedate him?

I'll know more on Tuesday when I take my 5 year old to get some teeth filled. Dentist found 5 cavities and she's getting a few of them filled Tuesday.

Re: At what age would they not sedate a child for a cavity filling?

Henry had dental work done at 3y6m and he was anesthetized at the local children's hospital. His was not a simply cavity, though, it was two fused teeth with an air pocket in between, so be had a "baby root canal" done on both. The dentist said had it just been a minor cavity he would have given him gas in the office.

I even had the option with what he had done, to have it done in office with gas. Insurance wouldn't pay for it, though, which was a red flag for me that maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea in the first place. I am happy with the decision we made to have him go under, but I hope we never have to go there again.

Hope you can get it fixed with minimal stress and pain for you both!

Hope everything goes well Really hoping they can just fix it with the numbing cream and local freezing!

Me too. DH wants to go with and be there and I'm afraid if he does, he'll start something because he can be kind of weird about stuff and that's the last thing we need. It's hard enough to find a dentist on the insurance we have, I don't want us to get booted because of something DH does/say.

Re: At what age would they not sedate a child for a cavity filling?

My oldest had a few cavities filled when she was just 6 and it was just the local and a shot in the gums, no gas or anything. She did fine. I am sure it helped that I had taken her to the store and picked out a toy she'd been wanting and told her she could have it if she was really good at the dentist. :-D I was also upfront with her and told her it would hurt and that the medicine was to help, but that it would probably still hurt at least a little bit.

I was 5-6 when I got my first cavity filled and it was gas and a shot.

My son had a cavity filled a few months ago (he's 5) and it was just the local numbing stuff. The dentist was really good at explaining in kid terms what she was doing. He did totally fine! I was shocked actually.
