When do your kids independantly start using the toilet for....

I know the answer to this question will vary a great deal depending on each child and parent and family situation, but....At about what age do you start to let your potty learned child independently wipe after *ahem* #2?

And what type of behavioral markers do you look for before letting them start trying?

Mine have all usually gotten it around 4 or so. I don't know about markers, just they would ask and I would let them, but would check. It didn't take long for them to figure it out.

We're almost 4 and we have to remind her to wipe. Then we check after and re-wipe if needed.

DS is five...I don't have to remind him to wipe, but he still needs help getting clean sometimes, I always check so I'm not stuck cleaning skidmarks out of underwear when doing laundry

DD is three and doesn't even attempt to wipe with #2, she just asks me...and with #1 she prefers to wipe with her hand (then go wipe it on daddy's sleeve )but she's just now finally getting the hang of the whole potty thing in general. Once she gets the concept of getting there on time, all the time, then we'll start working on wiping a bit more.

I have them start wiping around 5 but I keep helping with the really messies until 8. By 6 mine can usually get it but I would rather have to help than have my kids be dirty.

Re: When do your kids independantly start using the toilet for....

My son turned three a month ago and can do it but I like to double check. I'm pretty sure my older 2 kids didn't need help by they time the turned four but all of mine have trained at 24 months.

As for signs, the sign for us was I would go in to wipe him (he kicks us out for "privacy" )and he already would have done it and did a good enough job at it.

Re: When do your kids independantly start using the toilet for....

I've just started "teaching" DS how to wipe his bum. He'll be starting pre-k in august and I figured he'd need to wipe his own bum at school

Hmm yea school is what I'm worried about. DD CAN wipe herself but doesn't do a good enough job.

I used to teach kindergarten and kids would come to school not having been taught how to wipe. They'd stick their head out the door and say, "Teacher, can you come wipe me? I need help." I'd say, "Just do your best!" So don't wait TOO long to teach them.
