Acne remedies for teenage son...

My son is 13 and has pretty signifigant acne mostly the "T" zone. We tried Proactiv and that worked for a few months but then stopped, the clearskin, neutrogena...and nothing is working now. I was hoping some of you momma's out there might have some home remedies, homeopathic solutions, or just recommendations. I really feel bad for him, I know it makes him self-conscious but I don't know that we could afford a dermatologist. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Acne remedies for teenage son...

when my teenager had it on his face I would take a cotton ball with alcohol on it and dab over the bumps (pretty much his whole face) twice a day. It helped a little. I had to correct him scratching them constantly but when he finally realized his fingers were causing alot of the problem he has learned to fight it. His face is alot better now.

Wash daily with Dr. Bronner's Castille soap.

Also, if you (or someone you know very well) is breastfeeding, I've heard that swabbing it on the face before bedtime really helps! It wouldn't surprise me though. It works for ear infections, pink eye, diaper rash, eczema, etc. Seems kind strange for a teenager to accept, but if he's really self conscious about the acne, it may be the only alternative for him if nothing else is working.

Re: Acne remedies for teenage son...

My mother always told me to use toner (alcohol based) to help clear my skin and it never worked. When I got a bit older I just gave up on washing my face with anything but warm water and my face cleared up! A few years ago I switched to cleansing my face with jojoba oil any my skin is doing great, soft and blemish free My mother is in her late 50's and still has acne. I recently was watching a medical TV program stating that any acne product that drys out the oil from your skin will cause pimples because your body tries to counter the drying effect of the cleanser by producing more oil. I would look for a VERY mild cleanser or an oil based cleanser for your son and stay away from toners!

Re: Acne remedies for teenage son...

My daughter has very severe acne. We've spent thousands to try to get it under control.

One day, a very old man said "Use safegaurd bar soap.. suds it up in your hands, dab it on the acne, then leave it on as long as you can.. overnight is best". I thanked him, but ignored it. Safegaurd bar soap is hard to find anyway.

But, one day, I saw a pack of safegaurd at walgreens, so I bought it. And, it actually works. I was skeptical at first, but, it really seems to be working. She's not 100% yet, but it's a lot better than it was.

Avoid overwashing. I would do absolute basic, so cetaphil cleanser and water only. And moisturize with something just as gentle. And the biggest thing I learned, more water and less or no soda.

Dr. Bronners is oil based just stay away from the peppermint kind!

to the thought of suggesting to a teenage boy that he should apply breast milk to his face! (It probably would work awesomely however!)

Why stay away from the peppermint kind? That is the one I have...and use.

Re: Acne remedies for teenage son...

I would not recommend a toner that contains alcohol. But using toner is definitely a must! I'm using an Arbonne toner now and it is $$$ (I got it cheaper though b/c I hosted a party) so I am looking for a cheaper alternative that is all-natural and alcohol free (like the Arbonne one).

I never had acne in my life until about 6 months ago and I went to the derm today and she gave me some meds. I know you mentioned not having the funds to do that, but I wanted to let you know that my derm gave me a bunch of free samples for my meds to try them out before spending money on the prescription so if you do go you could ask about that.

Re: Acne remedies for teenage son...

I had very bad acne all through teen years...My skin is extremely sensitive to anything, and NOTHING I tried worked (in retrospect, probably made it worse!)...until I started using tea tree oil face wash. It is naturally antibacterial and feels clean without a harsh alcohol base
