Charity Sewing Not Allowed

As some of you have seen we have a thread in Craft Chat that is a sew-a-long for cloth pads to be donated to the DFG charity. I was contacted by a mod explaining the thread would be closed because members are not allowed to collect items for donation etc.

I do understand the mod's position and why the rules are in effect, however I am not personally collecting these items nor is any other member. We are simply all women who are coming together to sew items to be donated to a charity and we will each personally mail our finished items to the charity. A member did ask if we would send all items to one person but I have since gone and changed the thread title as well as informed everyone of the rules we must follow.

I suppose this leads me to my question, if the rule is no one is allowed to personally collect items for donation and everyone is simply sewing along and exchanging tips/photos of finished items then choosing to personally mail in said items directly to the charity, what is the issue? It isn't any different from any other SAL, other than we are kindly donating our items to people in need.

I appreciate any input and all consideration in keeping this thread open. We have a lot of members very excited to take part in this and I am willing to keep a disclaimer in the thread with the rules to ensure everyone follows appropriately.

Thank you!

I really don't see how that would not be allowed since you are not collecting them

we had a mama on here that was collecting diaper covers to send to the orphanage that she was getting her daughter from and got TONS!

how is that different?

I'm sorry that your post is getting taken down.

Re: Charity Sewing Not Allowed

Was the thread title changed before or after the moderator made contact?

It is possible that a report came in and between that report and the mods pm, the title was changed. I do recall a report, and from the one post I read, I did tell the mod that that type of thread was not allowed. The team agreed it was a great cause though and it has prompted further discussion.

I am hopeful we will have a place to be able to allow members to post about charities/organizations they care about.

FTR, the mama collecting diaper covers didn't outright ask for donations. She asked for cheap covers. Mama's decided to donate. No rule against someone deciding to donate. Asking people to donate is what cannot be done.

I checked your edit mama. You edited after you were contacted correct?

The difference in your thread and the mama taking the covers was that the mama taking the covers was trying to buy covers for her cause.

It is possible that you may be able to do this same thing, offer to buy the pads and then link to what they are for. Some may sell cheaply, others will probably donate.

I'll report this post so we can check on how to proceed with this.

Correct. I had no idea this was even an issue but as soon as I was notified that it was breaking rules I went ahead and corrected the wording as well as placed a disclaimer to try and make the thread more appropriate and hopefully keep it in place. I did ask the mod if I corrected the wording as well as placed a disclaimer of the DS rules and we all followed them if the thread would be allowed to stay open and she checked with whoever is above her, they responded with no. I felt badly making the mod be the middle guy so I pitched the idea of me asking in a public thread here to see if there was still room left to discuss any possible options of it staying open and she thought that would be a good idea.

My question remains, if a member is NOT allowed to personally collect donations and we are all simply sewing pads and donating them as individuals to a charity what exactly is the issue?

I appreciate your help and time!

Thank you.

I was just reading through your thread yesterday and thinking how beautiful it was to see all these mamas come together to help other women. I hope the thread stays open
