I think it's worth trying; I use Tide Free and Gentle b/c my toddler's diaper's were having stinky issues (ammonia at night and stinky synthetic inners). The Tide has taken care of those problems and no allergic reactions.

Re: ammonia and strong pee ???

I've found that since dd became a toddler, it's essential that I soak the diapers in HOT water for at least 3 hours. If I skip it, the diapers still smell.

so I:
Quick cold rinse
Fill the machine and soak in hot water and detergent for at least 3 hours
Then turn the agitation on for the longest wash possible.
Extra rinse.

I use bleach every few weeks, but the essential part is really that hot soak.

Re: ammonia and strong pee ???

Toddler pee is stronger especially boy pee. It varies from child to child too. DD had really strong ammonia smelling diapers from overnight. I would rinse them in the sink and than soak them in SunOxy and warm water for about 30 minutes or so, rinse again and throw them into the pail. It helped a lot.
If you have synthetic fiber diapers you may need to strip more often to get the smell out. I recommend using a sport wash, Penguin Sport Wash is the best. Dawn is harsh on diapers and takes many rinses to get out.

Re: ammonia and strong pee ???

At the current moment I'm using Planet. I've tried Rockin Green, Allen's, Charlie's, All F&C military version. I'm gonna be washing my diapers after lunch, so I can run and get something if I need. We are at a hotel right now, so I don't wanna do any stripping as it's 1.75 per load (small washer too). So..let me know what you guys think I should do. I have with me Planet, All F&C military version (which i use on our clothes), bacout, borax, oxyclean, and baking soda. That is everything that is with me at the current moment for washing. I could do soaks in the tub and then carry them downstairs to the washer if a soak is whatcha think I should do.

Re: ammonia and strong pee ???

Maybe try a soak with hottest tap water and a nice scoop each of Planet and oxiclean in the sink--soak for several hours if possible--and then put them in the washer with more Planet and run the longest hottest wash. Then run another hot wash cycle without detergent as a super rinse (since we loaded up on the soap for this and need to get it all back out).

I second the above! It's the best option with what you have on hand.

Re: ammonia and strong pee ???

Okay, I will try that next go round, have already washed for today (and at 1.75 a load and having to do 2 washers for 3 days of dipes, weird that the washers are tiny it cost me 10.50 for a cold wash, hot wash, and another one to rinse good) lol. I don't wanna redo it all, but I will DEFINITELY do that when I wash again on Friday morning. Thanks so much ladies!!!

Re: ammonia and strong pee ???

I keep a bucket with a Borax/ water mix in it to swish diapers in, and I think it's helped with the ammonia stink. Is your problem a stinky diaper pail? My DH suggested that I lay a wet rag (or wet flat fold diaper in my case) over the top of the pail and lo and behold! That cut down on the stink considerably.
As for Tide... Tide does a wonderful job of cutting down on ammonia stink, but it gave my DD a horrible rash, so I can't use it. If you call Procter and Gamble, I bet they'll send you some free samples of Tide and Tide Free and Gentle for you to try.
